Trump's budget could plunge nation's capital into recession
Yahoo Finance ^

While many of the targeted federal agencies have offices outside Washington, Trump's dream budget would hit the region disproportionately, with tens of thousands of jobs at risk. The cuts would be felt throughout the city, with fewer people riding the already-beleaguered Metro subway or eating at restaurants. It would also hurt Washington's already-shaky market for office space.

Economist Stephen Fuller of George Mason University, who has studied the regional economy for decades, estimated 20,000-24,000 federal employees and 10,000 federal contractors would lose their jobs under Trump's proposal. That equates to 5 percent of federal workers in the region.

With those workers earning an average salary of $111,000, the job losses would mean more than $2.2 billion in lost wages, Fuller said. That would reverberate around the city.

"These are basically shutting agencies down whose principal contribution to the Washington economy is jobs," Fuller said. "These are really good jobs. The average job in a restaurant (pays) $28,000. You've got to create a lot of restaurant jobs to replace one of these."

Visited Washington, DC on different occasions in 2007 thru 2012 era. It was prospering when the rest of the country was experiencing a definite downturn.
Restaurants, hotels, and real estate were prospering ... beyond the 100 mile radius of Washington it was abundantly clear the nation was in a recession.
If the political, scratch my back & I'll scratch yours type are hit hard ... tough s**t.

Every Ponzi scheme destroys lives and causes harm. Someone please show me where ignoring a problem made it better. Shall we wait until our debt is $100 Trillion and unpaid liabilities reach $100 Quadrillion??!!

I am afraid that it is already too late to solve these problems, let alone solve without a lot of pain. And, as is our history those most vulnerable will those hurt the worst. An example is the retired union members who have already had their pensions cut in half.

One of our local talk show hosts drove around DC in 2009 or 2010. They could not find a foreclosure sign.

Reality may be on its way to DC. It bites.

“nation’s capital into recession”

So what!

The nations capital feels what the rest of the country feels.

And more specifically, all those leftist liberals from EPA, etc., will be the ones out jobs. So what! They have put the rest of the country out of work.

8 years of liberal leftist policies with not one year of GDP over 3%

Never has that occurred before. Not during the Great Depression or the Civil War.

Less than 3% GDP for every year of Obama. A record!

Someone, please tell me how allowing Americans to keep more of their hard earned money is going to hurt the economy.

I was thinking that Fargo, ND would be a great place for the EPA. They could commute with nature and watch the Dakota Acess Pipeline being built.

I’m hoping the RATs cause a big stink and a budget impasse. Then they will have to “shut down the government”...and all “nonessential employess” will have to stay home.

Then President Trump will FIRE THEM!

Best thing that could happen to America would be to have the entire D. C. Area to suddenly have its unemployment rate go up by a factor of 10.
Get a bunch of worthless blood sucking federal workers off our asses.

I see a total lack of compassion.

Jeff Neely formerly of GSA –“I know I’m bad, but as Deb and I often say, why not enjoy it while we have it and while we can. Ain’t gonna last forever.”
