Ahh ... she’s a kid. Most kids are stupid & do stupid things (albeit for most kids not under the limelight). We ought to leave her alone.

We ought to leave her alone yes. But those parents don’t give two hoots about her. If they did they would not be paying the bills to leave her footloose in Manhattan at that age with no real job or school going on.
A gap year is like playing Russian Roulette. Can I take lots of risk, be out of studies for a year and will I be able to ever muster up the self discipline to go back to studying and a life of demands instead of partying, who knows lets roll the dice & see if I get AIDS, addicted, Roofied by my moral upstanding friends or if I’m safe and working towards my furure in a year.
I generally agree with that - unless/until the kids put themsselves out in the public arena. M. Obama the Younger is a borderline case, as she is 18, living away from her parents, and doing things like yelling at reporters that calls attention to herself. Had she quietly disappeared into some university I doubt we’d have anything more to say about her than we did about Chelsea in her time. When Presidents kids enter the world of work and live on their own, they become fair game for public criticism, youthful indiscretions and all. Just like any other kid, but on a national media scale because of who their parents are.
Luckily there were no digital cameras/cell phones/facebook pics for a lot of us when we were young....:^)
