Chicago Paper Implores Trump to Clean Up Yucca Mountain Mess Left by Obama
Daily Caller ^ | 4-13-17 | Andrew Follett

The Chicago Tribune’s editorial board implored President Donald Trump Tuesday to clean up the nuclear waste storage debacle left by former President Barack Obama.

Obama helped former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid to derail plans to store nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Without Yucca, nuclear power plants don’t have a permanent location to store spent fuel and left the federal government with $50 billion in legal liabilities.

“Many people in Nevada didn’t want the waste, no matter how safe or isolated the storage facility may be,” the editorial board wrote. “It was the ultimate NIMBY [Not In My Backyard] project. One of those opponents, alas, was Harry Reid, who for 10 years was Senate Democratic leader and in a position to get his way. As president, Barack Obama gave Reid exactly what he wanted, closing down the entire effort.”

The Tribune editorial board argued nuclear waste is a huge problem for Illinois, which has more spent fuel than any other state stored outside of Chicago.

“Obama’s capitulation [to Reid] defied scientific evidence as well as common sense,” the editorial board wrote, criticizing Obama for storing 79,000 tons of nuclear waste in facilities “much less secure and permanent than Yucca Mountain is designed to be” for purely political reasons. The editorial board argued Obama’s policy made “no sense” from a security, safety, or environmental perspective. Instead one easily defensible facility in Nevada, Obama spread waste storage across 34 states.

Furthermore, every person who has ever paid a utility bill in the US has contributed to the cost of developing the Yucca Mountain storage facility which was chosen after a multi-year search for an appropriate site. The State of Nevada gladly took the $$$ and the jobs to develop the facility and then blocked its use. Time to reverse that decision.

It isn’t the only mess Obama left that will have to be cleaned up.

Here's an easy way to get rid of nuclear waste: develop the molten salt reactor and use reprocessed spent uranium-235 fuel rods dissolved in molten fluoride salts as nuclear fuel.

I believe you are 100% correct.

A good friend of mine (now deceased) was a nuclear engineer and a strong proponent of Yucca Mountain storage and would calmly logically explain to anyone interested why it was a safe and sane place to store nuclear waste.

He certainly convinced me.

Nuclear “waste” is a political issue with many technical solutions.

The population control crowd believes the creation of efficient energy poses an extreme threat to their agenda, and so they oppose all solutions.

It’s time we expose the population control crowd as the extreme racists they are.
They are so fearful of third-world populations demanding access to and benefit of their own natural resources.

They have contracepted and aborted themselves into minority positions, but are so thrilled with the minimization of Christianity, they don’t much care about being overwhelmed by the Muslim population.

How many states are stored outside Chicago? Puzzling.

--I live not that far from it and am indeed all for the re-activation of Yucca Mountain--but , believe me , the political problem (and that is the only problem) is one big one, after all of the anti-nuke propaganda spread in Nevada over the last twenty or so years---

--"one cask falls off a truck and Clark County is uninhabitable for 300,000years" is typical of the opposition---

Only certain people in Nevada got money. Leftists mostly out of state and some friends of Reid. Trust me, I wrote a 200,000 word book on the subject.

You mean the Yucca Mountain mess Carter created and every president since has passed the buck on?! The fact is this thing was doomed from day one. Between the people of Nevada not wanting it, and the people of the rest of the states not wanting nuclear waste transported through their states to Yucca this thing was never going to happen and will never happen.

It was a good idea until the WIPP facility in New Mexico had a disaster. WIPP was supposed to be a low level storage pilot plant. They had a very hot accident and vented a considerable amount of radiation. There wasn’t even rudimentary filtration in place on the ventilation system. I thought we have gotten a lot smarter about this stuff, but obviously not.

Naw - we in Nevada have been nuked enough. We don’t even have a reactor in the State.

Lie all you want but the selection process and the reports on YM are seriously flawed and even falsified.

Dingy Harry didn’t have any problem funding the project, it was only after it was completed that he had a problem with it.

It was actually wanted here at Hanford (the BWIP, basalt waste isolation project). but it lost out to Yucca Mt.

Oh I’ll say never. This thing has been getting footdragged for 40 years. And they haven’t even been reduced to tying it up in court yet, that’s just on the budget and permission side. If it ever actually gets close to happening every city county and state any waste might go through will sue and tie it up for another 20 years. By the time the thing is actually in use the waste won’t be radioactive anymore.

"...and left the federal government with $50 billion in legal liabilities."

And the GOP won't even fund Trump's wall for 20 billion. Not to mention the 150 billion we gave to Iran to buy nukes to murder us.
