The DoD Has No Idea How Much The Mother Of All Bombs Costs

Posted on 04/14/2017 9:31:50 AM PDT by marktwain

The giant bomb U.S. forces dropped Thursday on an ISIS training camp in Afghanistan did not cost $314 million to develop, or $16 million per unit as reported by multiple news outlets.

Every news report about cost of the “Mother of All Bombs” relied on a misreading of a 2011 article or a dubious internet website that InfoWars once linked to with a “healthy bit of skepticism.”

The actual cost of the bomb is unknown. The actual cost of the program isn’t publicly available because the Mother of All Bombs, officially known as GBU-43 or the Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), is manufactured by the military and not a private defense company. (RELATED: US Drops ‘Mother Of All Bombs’ On ISIS In Afghanistan)

In fact, the Air Force doesn’t even keep track of the per unit cost, nor the cost of the program as a whole, because it is not manufactured privately.

“We don’t have a cost per unit” for the MOAB, Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “These munitions were produced in-house so we don’t have a standard procurement cost associated with them.”

The Air Force mostly used existing technologies and hardware for the first MOAB prototypes and never contracted out the full production of the bomb, so they did not need to itemize and add the cost of each weapon component, Stefanek told TheDCNF.

Having worked in the DOD for 30 years, my guess is that the in house cost for these weapons was about $200,000 each. Note that they contracted for the design of the guidance system, and that only cost $35,000. That is for the design, the most expensive piece of the puzzle.

They produced 10 of these weapons in only nine weeks. If we allow for a team of 50 people working on project, at a cost of $50 per hour and 40 hours per week, one week per bomb, would be 2,000 manhours or $100,000 for labor. Add $100,000 for material, which seems fairly generous.

The 13+ million per bomb story that is floating about is complete B.S.

And some will say in seriousness: “Gee, now we have a $13 million toilet seat that kills people.”

I’m saying it in pure sarcasm

Good to know.
That reduces the cost per IS combatant killed considerably.
I hope the number reported, 36, is complete BS too.

Hmmm. Will cnn report a gazillion dollars/unit? “Wasted” of course. I heard someone yesterday say there were only 16 “known” to exist. Maybe only 15 now. BOOM!!

Ditto. I read an initial report of 100. Maybe ISIS knows. But they aren't telling.

Wow. You guys ALL KNOW how much an in house bomb cost to make.

Cause the pentagon is so good with money.

Some of you even use the pay her hour (laughed out loud at that one).

Too funny :)

Do they forget the strategic value of destroying many tunnels, denying haven;hideouts for the terrorists? Yes, they do, deliberately.

Why are they wasting all of that MOAB money on a bunch of kaffirs, what a waste!/S

Use it on a few radical mosques in Indonesia, who are connected to Barry Sotoro , with who he has likely been meeting in French Polynesia. Gonna light up the Pacific and Australia. Liberal fascism first and Liberal Fascism last with Obummer, spreading the good news of Rules for Radicals by Saul Alinsky, and how to use social media championed by that lefty gonzo, purple pimpernel, Mark Zuckerberg.

Another way to look at it...

Apart from the cost of delivery, this bomb cost us nothing.

It was paid for years ago, and there are no plans to replace it.

**I hope the number reported, 36, is complete BS too.**

It’s like sinking the biggest battleship in the world and only finding three floating bodies. Therefore, the target was destroyed, but ONLY three enemy killed.

Wonder how many are still buried under millions of tons of collapsed caves and tunnels.

Whatever the hell the cost of that MOAB was, it is one hell of a lot less for the result than the sending of 50 WWII B-17’s that suffered 10% casualties which included the 10 AMERICAN crew members is each lost plane.
Judgement of the “worth” of the bomb depends upon one’s “sense of value”. Dollars or AMERICAN lives.

I think it is a half -truth. Yes, 36 bodies were recovered, but there were probably hundreds that were instantly vaporized. So they are only reporting on the bodies that they can actually see and calling that the dead body count.
