Sorry for my ignorance, but what is a “snap” election? They aren’t electing parliament again, are they?!

IIRC a snap election in a country like Britain means an election that's not *required*.I think in Britain national elections must be held at least every 5 years but can be called earlier.

Yes, a full general election of the House of Commons. What makes it a snap election is the sudden nature of it being called without clear warning, well before the expiry of the current term - snap meaning ‘quick’ in this case.

That's exactly what they're doing.

A "snap" election is an election outside of the regular schedule. All the parliament seats are up for re-election. The Prime Minister is not directly elected by the people, the leader of the winning party gets the job.
