“troubling evidence”
That’s a very odd modifier to use in this situation.
To me that says “there’s not really any evidence”.
With evidence one feels certitude is pushed toward action. One is “troubled” when one isn’t sure about things.

Yes, and in this case I think the Enquirer wants its readers to be troubled about it because they're not going to publish anything that would bring them any certitude. That cliff hanger of doubt helps the sales of future issues.
