Landmines are so good in the defense. But god they suck for decades after. The guy who laid it gets killed, a map gets destroyed, and it vanishes down the memory hole and lays there for a 3 or 4 decades. Cambodia is lousy with them to this day. Also the middle east.

If the land mine was on a road, it would seem that it had not been there all that long.
Laos as well. Tons of unexploded ordnance . Kids better at finding it than sappers.
