Editorial: Republicans secede from Stewart's gubernatorial campaign
Richmond-Times Dispatch ^ | April 28, 2017 | Editorial

Corey Stewart is running for the GOP’s gubernatorial nomination yet he seems more interested in winning election as president of the Confederacy. His emphasis on Confederate monuments rates as the strangest tactic in Virginia’s political history.

And it has redounded to his disadvantage. Stewart serves as chairman of Prince William County’s Board of Supervisors. The other day Glendell Hill, the county’s sheriff, withdrew his support of Stewart and switched his backing to Ed Gillespie, the GOP front-runner. Hill cited Stewart’s Confederate fixation as a reason for his secession. He denounced the divisive nature of Stewart’s platform.

The establishment is rallying around its own candidate (Ed Gillespie), stop the presses.

Virginia is a blue state since voting for Obama twice and Clinton once; someone who makes mistakes ala Todd Akin or Richard Mourdock is not going to win in any state, let alone Virginia.

Regardless, this article is smarmy, between its 'secede' joke (which it does multiple times), and:

The other day Glendell Hill, the county’s sheriff, withdrew his support of Stewart and switched his backing to Ed Gillespie, the GOP front-runner.

Is literally one guy.

It would actually be nice to start to win again in Virginia state wide; the Confederacy will not be a unifying issue for Republicans; Gillespie has the best chance to win.

No in fact I was disappointed that there weren’t mass protests in the South against this.

I wonder why. Their ancestors fought a war and were honoring the dead and the heroes.

It’s certainly not like they were taken over and assimilated, thank God. Even the names are still the same. Georgia is still Georgia, etc.

I don’t get the problem.

And I’m from NYC.

Exactly so. The Democrats are the party of slavery. The Republicans are—or used to be—the party of history.

I don’t know why the hell these RINOs let the Democrats rewrite history and get away with it.

Romney would have won without the DC suburbs in 2012--Obama's plurality in Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties plus the city of Alexandria was greater than his plurality in the state as a whole. I haven't seen the county-by-county figures for 2016. The Yankee immigrants are tipping the state to the Democrats.

There was a news item a few days ago about removing a statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville. Of course that is the home of the University of Virginia (but Obama did not carry Albemarle County by a very wide margin).

All history has flaws. Corey has a lot of support, so the establishment writes a hit piece. The establishment isn’t as strong as it used to be. A good part of his support is because of his historical stance. Gillespie doesn’t have strong support. Gillespie has been damaged a lot in this campaign. Hopefully to the point of him being unelectable if he is the nominee. Virginia doesn’t need a fake conservative.

Yeah. The RTD used to be a decent newspaper. But they’re showing their true colors now. Damned liberals.

Exactly, they want the Cheap Labor Express Republican Ed Gillespie, Designated Loser.
He lost his Senate bid because he refused to use Warner’s vote for Rubio’s Gang of Amnesty bill against him because he is an amnesty supporter too.

I guarantee you if they ever try to remove the statues from Monument Ave in Richmond you will see mass protests.

I saw a lot of them when I was a kid.

My pop never said anything about enemies or victor/loser.

He said they were brave men who died for a lot more reasons that you’re lead to believe, but you’re too young to understand.

I understand now.

Pop talked a lot about things you wouldn’t normally say to a kid of 11 or 12, but he knew he was on borrowed time and wanted to cover as much ground as possible.

He did a great job :)
