The Daily 202: Eight ways Trump got rolled in his first budget negotiation
WaPo ^ | 5/1/17 | James Hohmann

Now that the language has posted, here are the eight most notable areas Trump caved in his first big spending negotiation: . Administration officials have insisted they already have the statutory authority to start building the wall under a 2006 law. This prevents such an end run.

The $1.5 billion for border security is also half as much as the White House requested. Additionally, there are no cuts in funding to sanctuary cities, something a federal judge said last week would be required for the Justice Department to follow through on its threats. And there is also no money for a deportation force.

2. Non-defense domestic spending will go up, despite the Trump team’s insistence he wouldn’t let that happen. The president called for $18 billion in cuts. Instead, he’s going to sign a budget with lots of sweeteners that grow the size of government. Mitch McConnell made sure $4.6 billion got put aside to permanently extend health benefits to 22,000 retired Appalachian coal miners and their families. Nancy Pelosi made sure $295 million was included to shore up Medicaid in Puerto Rico. Chuck Schumer got $61 million to reimburse local law enforcement agencies for the cost of protecting Trump when he travels to his residences in Florida and New York. There is also another $2 billion in disaster relief money for states, which bought a couple votes. (Kelsey Snell, our lead budget reporter, has more examples.)

3. Barack Obama’s cancer moonshot is generously funded.

No, this is more the Art of War. In other words, don’t pick a fight you can’t win.

The border wall required a fraction of 1% of the budget. If the Democrats had shut down the Federal Government over the wall, it is they and not the President who would have looked bad. There was absolutely no good reason for Trump to blink in this showdown, unless he was being pressured by establishment members of his own party who also have no interest in ever funding the border wall.

What was so bad about Ted Cruz again??? At least this man would have fought for America to the bitter end.

Bull.

Lyin’ Ted capitulated before his campaign even began.

Or do you forget teddy bears at the border?

He didn’t make much of a “deal” at all. Just what did his supporters get that he had promised. And Paul Ryan is no Sam Rayburn, you wouldn’t know the clown led the majority.

Ivanka and Jared win instead.

Pfffft, there will be no 2nd term at this rate. The GOPe is making this happen. They want to be in the minority again, doing this will make that happen.

Yeah we’d be in much better shape with Neil Bush in charge of finances and VP Carly.

LOL at this Ted Cruz crap - a guy that is not even constitutionally eligible to be president.

Name one conservative change that Cruz has championed that was enacted? that’s right, you can’t.

I want Trump to veto this CR but to pretend that Cruz would be able to get a better CR passed when all he has accomplished in his life is flapping his gums and fleecing suckers like you is laughable.

Should The Trumpster put 3 or four Conservativex on SCOTUS in his first term, their may be no reason for a second term....

Exactly.

As I said, don’t pick a fight you can’t win. There’s a leftist supermajority in both houses of Congress. Trump picks a fight, they override his veto and he loses all of his remaining leverage over Congress.

It’s a choice of damnations here, and it really pisses me off that instead of blaming the GOP for this BS, they’re laying the blame on one of the only people in DC who is actually TRYING to do the right thing.

As I said, it’s disgusting how so many so-called conservatives on this thread are gleeful about this horrible budget because it means they get the chance to make the President look bad.

“...It’s disgusting how happy so called conservatives are about this budget.”
****************************************
Let’s see, in your mind, conservatives who are sad & angry over this unnecessary surrender to the ‘RATS are actually happy over it. You are twisting yourself into knots over this surrender to convince yourself that it’s not bad.

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE!!

One of the parts I do not like about the budget according to Rush is that he cannot use any money from the budget for the wall. Also Trump is only 100 days into his administration and he needs to learn a lot.

The massive waste in this bill is proof that:

(1) Democrats hate our kids, who will have to pay the debts that big government liberals are racking up.

(2) The republicans in Congress are not on our side either.

President Trump needs to deliver smaller government, and he has until the end of September to do it. As the parasites who hate productive Americans take their victory lap, Team Trump needs to learn from the left’s gloating and start playing hardball.

A. Get the non-controversial appropriations bills through Congress early, so that the threat of a government shutdown is limited to areas in which we don’t care.

B. Hold the line on the Wall. Either it gets funded, or the military patrols high-risk sections of our border for the next seven years. That would make the Neocons, who never saw a war they didn’t like, sad. What would McCain and Graham do without a frivolous war to cheer for, if our military was spending half of their deployments keeping undocumented democrats from crossing the Mexican border?

C. Hold the line on Obamacare. Either it gets cut or Labor/HHS/Education gets shut down.

D. Hold the line on frivolous or even nice but non-essential spending. Either PBS/NPR/NEH/NEA get eliminated or their entire department gets shut down. The same for expansions in basic research. While I approve of real science, we are $20T in debt. We can’t afford it even if it is nice.

E. Our federal budget is like an extravagant family spending on piano, violin, trombone, ballet, tap, and ballroom dance lessons for each child . . . when numerous credit cards are already maxed out. At some point, you have to eliminate nice things to be responsible. At some point, beans and rice have to become a major part of your diet, with no restaurant meals until you pay down the debt.
