Trump raises prospect of government shutdown to leverage better budget for GOP in fall
WASHINGTON POST ^ | 02 MAY 2017 | Damian Paletta and John Wagner

President Trump on Tuesday called for a government shutdown later this year and suggested the Senate might need to prohibit future filibusters, dramatic declarations from a new commander in chief whose frustration is snowballing as Congress continues to block key parts of his agenda.

“Our country needs a good ‘shutdown’ in September to fix mess!” Trump wrote in a series of tweets Tuesday morning. He likely meant a shutdown in October, as the current spending bill lawmakers have agreed to would fund government operations through Sept. 30.

VANITY - THE CR: ANOTHER VICTORY FOR TRUMP

I told you FReepers. I fricking told you.

Trump is positioning his team and will be loaded for bear in September. The disastrous Obama fiscal year and his legacy will come to a screeching halt at the end of Fiscal Year 2017.

- The CR is DEAD. There will be no more CRs. We will return to a sane budget process as envisioned by our Founders.

- The shutdown card has been completely taken away from the Dems. If the Dems want to shut down the government - GO FOR IT!

- Paul Ryan and the RINOs have been put on notice. Conservative candidates will be making preparations to run in 2018 in the Fall, when people are paying attention. They will vote for Trump's priorities - OR ELSE.

- The gibsmedats and the SJWs won't be marching on Washington every week. They got their crumbs until September, and then Trump and his team will present a budget that will benefit all Americans, not just leftist special-interest groups and foreigners.

Was he also waving a white piece of paper while talking about peace in our time?

We didn't send republicans to DC to negotiate the terms of our surrender. So now they're going to find their manhood in September? Yeah. Sure. Some people can find happiness in anything.

I’m over-the-top disgusted if President Trump signs anything that funds Planned Parenthood. We as a nation deserve the wrath of God if that happens.

Why would you want to fight for spending cuts on spending that's going to expire in 5 months, and when most of those funds have already been allocated?

We didn't send republicans to DC to negotiate the terms of our surrender. So now they're going to find their manhood in September? Yeah. Sure. Some people can find happiness in anything.

Yes, we did. So did you stay home in a snit in 2016 or voted for the Republicans and continue to keep their feet to the fire.

Now's not the time to worry about fighting spending on spending that's going to go completely away within months. This 5 months gives Trump valuable time to reorganize and get his picks confirmed. Take out NK. And start the conversation on reducing the size, scope, and power of the Federal Government.

You are quite the dreamer. There will be no returning to Founding Principal. The Republican party mirrors the Democrats and Trump is just another liar who became President.

There will be no wall, no tax reform, no high paying jobs, no nothing. Just continued corruption, cultural decline and a country where white men will continue to lose their way of life.

The “American Dream” is so dead.

I sincerely hope you're right. As for me, I will continue to oppose this bill.

I didn’t vote for President Trump so he could “take out NK”. 99% of the things I care about are DOMESTIC. I don’t want any attention diverted away from domestic accomplishments. Lobbing cruise missiles at other countries or parking flotillas off the coast of supposedly “highly dangerous” nations is just more diversionary, sabre-rattling nonsense.

I also don’t want to hear about how much 3-D (or 4-D) chess Trump is playing. Our biggest enemies are right here in the U.S. Many are in Congress (or living in our metropolitan areas). They (Secular Globalists) are just as much your (and my) enemy as friggin’ NK. Notice how we got nothing in the budget EXCEPT stuff that Neo-Cons and Leftists would want. But we’re supposed to take it up the tailpipe all in the name of some supposed “grand strategy”. Here’s a novel idea....how about we get what we want and the Leftists and Neo-Cons wait to get military budget increases and funding for various Left-wing special interest. The excuse-making is wearing thin.

“Our country needs a good ‘shutdown’ in September to fix mess!”

Why are we waiting for September? Why are we tacitly accepting an Omnibus bill? Why not return to funding in stages as we have in the past?

The Omnibus package was a Democrat/Communist approach to limit debate and sneak or force funding for many unpopular programs.

The agency or agencies with serious funding issues can be negotiated individually as they were in more rational times.

If a shut down is good for September, it is good for May.

If I was president I’d

* veto ANY budget that includes ANY item not in the explicit enumerated powers. Override that if you want.
* If I get another generic Ryan-Omnicrap budget I’d only pay for explicit enumerated powers’ functions
* tell congress to pass independent funding legislation for anything that they want to fund through the elastic clause with clear explanation of how the funds are “necessary and proper” for the other powers.
* tell congress and states to pass amendments if they want the federal government to have additional powers
* Tell Ds and Rs “see you in court” if they insist on a Hamiltonian instead of Madisonian interpretation of the Constitution. Congress makes the budget but I’m in charge of spending until you impeach me - and I’m not spending if the Constitution doesn’t give me the power or congress the power to authorize it. The public will learn a lot about the Constitution if you impeach me for NOT FOLLOWING IT.

That means a “real” shutdown.

After that we can start negotiating (with public visibility). But make citizens aware of the Constitution and get the political class to argue for all of the expanded powers they want. An enumerated powers interpretation of the Constitution is not realistic but it’s a good starting point for negotiating a reasonable government. And a shutdown is a good way to make the point that “enumerated powers/limited governement” is my starting point rather than “general welfare/anything I want” position.
