In 1973 or 1974 I had to babysit a NK defector to hospital, dinner, haircuts, clothes etc. and he truly believed everything he had been told. He lived in a worker’s paradise, he was more educated, he had more rights than Americans, his clothing was superior, etc, etc. I hated the guy for his ignorance but did what I was told. I took him to a SK grocery store to get a pack of cigarrettes and he looked at all the food, merchandise, products, etc. and scornfully asked “But where do the REAL people shop? They can’t come in these staged stores, can they?” When he finally realized this WAS reality he almost was over come by shock. He would barely allow Dr.s, nurses, EMT’s to help him overcome his reaction. I was glad. I was off that detail.
