Not much info yet on whether there is any actual danger to hundreds of workers, or not. Could be entirely contained, but the concern is about radioactive particles which can be breathed in.

After Fukishima you would think we would be quickly shutting down the nuclear industry. This industry needs to shut down ASAP.

This plant hasn’t produced plutonium since the 1980s. It is all on a kind of maintenance and clean-up basis, I understand, but it is a prolonged, expensive, and difficul process to deal with plutonium.

I don’t agree at all the nuclear power should all be shut down. It makes a lot of sense but new generation reactors should be deployed.

The physical fall/collapse of an old tunnel ceiling almost certainly knocked loose surface contamination and grit from nearby surfaces .. As well as the physical hazard of being underground while the roof is collapsing!

Many hundreds of areas at Hanford are not contaminated nor contain radioactive piping, equipment or elements.

Many acres and storage spots do contain contaminates.

We don’t know yet enough to decide or debate anything. No reports of injuries?

Since Government’s in charge, you can expect stupidities.

This is nuclear weapons industry.

PUREX was last plant built, but is still the legacy of WWII.

WPPSS (WHOOPS) was a private entity set up by the state to develop 5 commercial reactors. Plants 1,2, & 4 were to be located on the Hanford Reservation and Plants 3 & % were to be located at Satsop near Aberdeen. They went bust and only completed Plant #2.

The building in this story was shut down a number of years ago and was constructed for the purpose of extracting plutonium from spent fuel rods from the government owned N Reactor. It was not a nuclear reactor.

After Tacoma Narrows you’d think we’d have stopped building bridges and shut them all down.

BS. Nothing is unconditionally safe.Shall we ban cars because of crashes?Aircraft? House because people die in fires? Natural gas use? Windmills chop up birds make noise and spoil the views. EVERY energy source has consequences.

Morenew nuclear plants ,quite possibly thorium fueled is a better stategy.

Your position is irrational, and I oppose it strongly. Nuclear power is far safer, per megawatt, fuel to distribution, than any other method of power generation.

After the South Fork Dam collapse (killed 2200 people), you’d think we’d have shut down all the dams and stopped building them.
