...He was sentenced to die for murdering his elderly neighbor, Dr. Harry Johnston, in 1992. According to testimony, some of the stab wounds Ledford delivered almost decapitated the 73-year-old physician...

How about some cold steel for his last...

Save the money -- he won't be hungry for long.

Take some of that seized heroin out of the police evidence locker and fire him up with an elephant dose. Two problems solved. No pharm companies needed.

Might also get across the message that heroin is a KILLER!

Give him a bowl of ramen and be done with the POS

Just fire up old sparky and give him a TV dinner to hold in his lap for later.

Honestly if they were caught and the evidence is clear, going back to the 1800s timetables of execution would not be a problem for me.

In the dumbbell murder case (the name refers to the perpetrators, not the weapon), the inspiration for Double Indemnity, the convicts were executed within ten months of the crime, - the crime, not the trial - and no one thought that was unusual. This is also the case that resulted in the infamous NY Daily News cover:

In the Sacco and Vanzetti case, one of the last ditch appeals was based on the claim that the more than seven year period between conviction and execution constituted cruel and unusual punishment. Since the delay was the result of appeals instituted be the defense, it was summarily dismissed, and justice delayed for seven years was finally fulfilled. Today, a seven year wait would be considered hasty.

Eccl. 8.11 - Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

When I lived in Washington state, when snow hit the mountain passes, they would have chain-up areas with signs saying chains were required. A state patrol car parked with its engine running behind the sign seemed to imply that sentence against violators would be swift. Guess how many violators there were....

“also has a complaint pending in federal court in Atlanta, saying a death by lethal injection could be horrific”

Also from this newsbit...

He was sentenced to die for murdering his elderly neighbor, Dr. Harry Johnston, in 1992. According to testimony, some of the stab wounds Ledford delivered almost decapitated the 73-year-old physician.

Dr Johnston was unavailable for comment on how "horrific" this humane sentence would be as a result of his multiple stab wounds and near decapitation...25 years ago!

Death-row inmates should be executed within 30 days. This lingering on death row and appeal after appeal just makes a mockery of the whole judicial system. And the last meal is like a middle finger to the victims. They should get the regular prison slop as their last meal.

If there is proof beyond a doubt, then yes. No Pharisee type legalism - the judge picked his nose during the sentencing so we need a new trial type stuff.

As for a last meal, good tradition, let's keep it.

My comment has always been:

“Did the victim get a nice last meal? No? Then eff off.”

I agree. Slam dunk cases being the qualification, get it over with.

Give the family of the victim relief, and save the public the financial drain of keeping these folks around.

I would also address the corrections officers that have to deal with them. They shouldn’t have to.

We ought to go back to execution by hanging. A Brit, Albert Pierrepoint, perfected the technique in the aftermath of the Nuremburg trials, and was the crown’s official executioner in the UK, offing some 400 convicted murderers in the decade after WWII. The convicted person died instantly at the completion of the drop as the result of Mr. Pierrepoint’s mathematical calculations and meticulous preparation. No suffering; no “cruel and unusual” punishment.

The story of the trial and execution of the last woman put to death in the UK, Ruth Ellis in 1955, is really fascinating and worth a read.

She was convicted in a one day trial at London’s famous Old Bailey courthouse on June 20, 1955. Her appeal was denied on July 11, 1955, and she literally reached the end of her rope shortly after 9 am on July 13, 1955.

Holloway Prison is in close proximity to Arsenal soccer club’s new 60,000 seat Emirates Stadium in north London. Pentonville, which is a men’s prison, is located in the center of London near the bus route between between King’s Cross and Liverpool Street railway stations.
