Returning to Twin Peaks (reminder: Showtime tonight at 9 EST)
National Review ^ | May 20, 2017 | Jim Geraghty

What should we expect from Showtime’s Twin Peaks, the spectacularly unexpected reboot of the quirky, genre-busting mystery series that rose quickly and fell even more quickly over the course of two seasons on ABC in the early Nineties?

First, if you find the whole thing too weird to enjoy . . . you’re not alone. Twin Peaks was always an acquired taste, a series that borrowed bits and pieces and styles of almost everything that had come before and mixed them in a blender: murder mystery, 1980s night-time melodrama, slapstick comedy, ’50s Americana nostalgia, the supernatural and occult, gripping psychological portraits, dark serial-killer horror, and surreal, dream-like imagery. The show was never designed for the widest audience or casual viewing.

One of the finest television series ever produced. And arguably the most influential of all time.

I will be watching with profound interest.

I watched the first season in its original broadcast (taped them even) and think I lost track of the series somewhere in the second season. Never saw the film.

I own the series and film on dvd and plan to watch them at some point but its not on my plate of things to do right now.

Since this is a reboot, it is out of continuity with the first program?

David Lynch is a pretty “hit and miss” guy. Yes, he did Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet, but he also made Dune.

It continues the story from the original series. not a remake.

Not a reboot. It's a true continuation from the original ABC series and the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me prequel movie. Same continuity.

The dream-Laura told Dale that she would see him again in 25 years. The movie came out in 1992. Right on time.

Never watched it and never had the slightest interest. I’ve never heard anyone say it was so influential, on what is that assessment based? I had enough of David Lynch in “Blue Velvet” and was never tempted to sample more.

Look on the bright side: Lynch did Dune after sitting down to lunch with George Lucas and turning down the offer to direct Return Of The Jedi.

Imagine how torn up THAT would have been.

It's about time they made a show about the staff at those bars/restaurants.

And every few episodes you could have the local police shoot it up.

It was my favorite show for a while. Toward the end it sort of lost it’s way. When it ended, I was just about ready to quit watching.

Also making her Father the killer was just too “just like every other show” for me.

The plus column of his films far outweigh the negative column. No one else is currently working on his level.

Dune was compromised by studio heads. As he said, he learned his lesson from it (always get final cut). The new Twin Peaks is 18 hours of pure Lynch, without network tampering.

I often fantasize about what Lynch’s Ewoks would have been like.

What other prime time shows had incestuous murder in 1990?

My daughter loves this show.

In a week or two we are taking a family vacation (probably our laat, but I say that every time) up to the PNW and we are visiting all the spots in the show.
