"Sanctuary cities lose access to federal grants that require complying with federal immigration law – cue the histrionics"

Late on Monday, Attorney General Jeff Session issued a memorandum to all the “grant-making components” within the Justice Department cutting off any grants to sanctuary jurisdictions. In what will no doubt be a surprise to many in the media who misinterpreted the April injunction issued by Judge William Orrick (an Obama appointee) in the lawsuit filed by the City of San Francisco and Santa Clara County, Sessions’ action complies fully with that order.

The May 22 memorandum outlines that any city or county applying for a Department of Justice (DOJ) grant “administered by the Office of Justice Programs and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services” that requires the applicant to certify compliance with all federal laws will not be eligible for a grant if they are a sanctuary jurisdiction. A sanctuary jurisdiction is defined as any city or county that “willfully refuse[s] to comply with 8 U.S.C. §1373.”

Another judge will stop this. Liberal cities have the same right to our tax dollars as Planned Parenthood does. /sarc

I don’t think a Judge can force a rubber stamping of an application for any grant. That probably draws the Judge into a felony area risking jail themselves.

Obama used the cut off of federal funding to schools that did not adopt Michelle's school lunch program. The Federal government used highway funds to force states to comply with federal speed limits. This resistance to federal law is all BS.

I would like to prosecute the mayors and governors who openly defy the law. There should also be federal supplied lawyers to assist people who are victims of illegal alien crime in sanctuary cities so they can sue the local officials and government.

not near enough, but moving in the right direction.

shove it, judiciary. You are not there to make law. That is the job of the legislature.

Don’t forget Reagan’s Secretary of Transportation, Elizabeth Dole, forced states to comply with the 21 year old drinking age in order to get federal funding for roads. Withholding federal funds in order to secure compliance with a piece of the Administration’s agenda is not new to Trump, Obama, or Clinton. (I have despised E. Dole ever since she pulled that).

“Sessions for President! Imagine a Pence-Sessions ticket!!”

This far, I am not particularly impressed with Sessions. He needs to put the processes of Justice into gear and get on with it. Now he’s getting embroiled in all this crap about his dealings with Russia. We cannot afford an AG who has to recuse himself from this and that because of some supposed tangential involvement.

Our city isn’t officially a sanctuary city, but the police do not ask....
So it might as well be. We have many new “immigrants.”

I wonder whether this means fed funds will be withheld.

I agree. Jeff Sessions is underwhelming and under aggressive. He needs to be peeling the hide off of some of these long time professional thieves.
