Imagine if two news publishers dominated digital media in the way that Facebook and Google do.
The Government would not allow such a duopoly to stand. Campaigners would call for them to be broken up in the name of media plurality.
Yet by 2020 Google and Facebook are expected to take 71 per cent of all the money spent in the UK on digital advertising, according to a report by analysts OC&C.
The effect of this can already be seen and is devastating for both the news industry and for society in general.

Google news is incredibly biased, but I’ve never seen Facebook.

It is. You almost never see Fox News listed, but the Huffington Post usually is multiple times.
Facebook has the trending news sidebar, and if you click on a link it takes you to a hashtag page concerning the story.
It’s stunning that between Google and Facebook they’re on track to take 70% of advertising dollars in the U.K., despite not producing the content. It’s probably a similar situation here.
And just who is going to save journalism from, you know, the journalists?
I noticed after ordering a pizza that the website with Google ads that I was visiting was showing pizza ads from the pizza place I had bought the pizza from.
Not sure how Pizza Hut benefits from that. So I went shopping online for bikinis and lingerie, don’t wear either, but the ads are very pleasant.
