Tribune Editorial: ICE crackdown is making all of us less safe
sltrib.com ^ | May 23, 2017

It's how dictators operate.

Pick a relatively small, politically powerless group of people and portray them as objects of fear and derision. Then swoop in with the power of the state to arrest members of that disfavored group and reap the political benefits of protecting the state from the threat that you invented.

This is why the current administration's move to arrest and deport more people who are in the United States without proper documentation, but who have committed no other crime, is so troubling and so counter to what America should stand for.

Whether by design or default, this is a policy of divide and conquer, one that re-enforces irrational fears of The Other among many citizens while pushing members of immigrant communities further into a parallel world where contact with all government services — including legitimate law enforcement — comes to be feared and shunned.

This does not make anyone safer. It makes us all less safe, less able to move freely and do our business without looking over our shoulder.

We do have quite strict immigration laws already on the books...Problem is, enforcing them is “a job Americans refuse to do”...So maybe we should hire Mexicans to enforce them!!! /sarcasm;)

You mean like Elian Gonzales? Cowardly agents broke down his door, and grabbed him at the end of the barrel of an assault rifle.

Everyone should know that the mormon church is open borders amnesty central. They do it like the catholic church to get members. That is why all the mormon pols like Hatch, Lee,Flake, etc etc are the movers behind open borders. It is a money making operation for the church and mormon businessmen.

SL Tribune is a leftist rag. It is also anti-mormon and has been for years. That should please many of the fanatics here.

Mormons are 90% conservatives. Most mormons that I know detest Romney and Reid and voted for Trump. However Salt Lake City itself is not majority mormon. This is why we get a faggot mayor there or an ACLU freak. There are plenty of leftwing loons there and the Trib is their baby. The Trib very seldom allows any dissenting views on their pages. The Deseret News which is supposed to be more mormon in content does print opposing views to its generally conservative opeds. Sounds familiar.

I’ve gleaned this from 25 years of infrequently scanning both papers. The Trib changed editors a couple of years back and isn’t so anti-mormon but the last editorial page I saw was still loony Russia Russia Russia.

They act as if all that's needed is "proper documentation," like it's an automatic day pass to enter the country. No interviews, no screening, no means testing, just wave "proper documentation" and you're in.

“These liberals can be extremely dangerous.”

Well...last meeting we had with the “extremely dangerous” leftists showed they could run away real fast. And when cornered, they cried real hard for the cops to come rescue them.

"...people who are in the United States without proper documentation, but who have committed no other crime, is so troubling and so counter to what America should stand for. "

This ranks (IMHO) as the most irrational defense of these illegal scum I've ever seen.

First the author admits that they are criminals ("who have committed no other crime").

Second, the United States of America should do away with the rule of law ("...what America should stand for.")

Sounds as bad as odickhead's statement that Islam was a de facto member of the Founding Fathers!

*YAWN*

The Left really needs a new playbook. The attempt to spread outrage with the "this affects all of us" mantra is very, very stale.

Immigration law is clear. Obey the law. Period.

If you don't obey the law, you may get arrested and punished.

It's the same in every other country folks.

“ICE crackdown is making all of us less safe”

Those of us non-Democrats who obey the law, we’re comfy.
We’re sitting in our comfy chairs rooting for ICE.
Go get `em boys! yup yup yup yup yup

I don’t know, I feel much safer every time I hear one of the illegal immigrants are deported. I would really feel much safer if they started deporting Marxist Stream Media progressives to their much loved Third World countries.

If he’s talking about Latinos, they are neither small nor powerless.

"a relatively small, politically powerless group of people"

Sorry Pal, but illegal aliens are one of the most politically powerful, protected classes there is.

There are 10s of millions of them. They've got far more power in the mass media and congress than do American Citizens. Congress-critters, elected and appointed political official, and law enforcement chiefs refuse to uphold their vows to support the Constitution of the US, and the laws of this country.

And you falsely portray them as "poor, defenseless victims."
