Earth is likely to reach more dangerous levels of warming even sooner if the U.S. retreats from its pledge to cut carbon dioxide pollution, scientists say. That's because America contributes so much to rising temperatures.
President Donald Trump, who once proclaimed global warming a Chinese hoax, said in a tweet Wednesday that he would make his "decision over the next few days" on whether the United States stays in or leaves the 2015 Paris climate change accord in which nearly every nation agreed to curb its greenhouse gas emissions.
Leaders of seven wealthy democracies, at a summit in Sicily, urged Trump to commit his administration to the agreement, but said in their closing statement that the U.S., for now, "is not in a position to join the consensus."
"I hope they decide in the right way," said Italy's prime minister, Paolo Gentiloni. More downbeat was German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said the leaders' talks were "very difficult, if not to say, very unsatisfactory."
In an attempt to understand what could happen to the planet if the U.S. pulls out of Paris, the Associated Press consulted with more than two dozen climate scientists and analyzed a special computer model scenario designed to calculate potential effects.
Scientists said it would worsen an already bad problem and make it far more difficult to prevent crossing a dangerous global temperature threshold.
Calculations suggest it could result in emissions of up to 3 billion tons of additional carbon dioxide in the air a year. When it adds up year after year, scientists said that is enough to melt ice sheets faster, raise seas higher and trigger more extreme weather.
"If we lag, the noose tightens," said Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer, co-editor of the peer-reviewed journal Climatic Change.

I blame the Mexicans. They eat a lot of beans. They cause global warming and air pollution.
"If we lag, the noose tightens," said Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer, co-editor of the peer-reviewed journal Climatic Change - This part tricks you into giving that opinion some weight.
Climate Change is a religion, not a science.
Democrats will have a Malthusian hissy fit. The sky is falling, we will run out of energy, the earth can't support all the people we are creating. The environment will collapse and species will die out. Trump is evil and the source of all evil. Republicans are evil and the source of all evil. Money is evil and the source of all evil, which is why the poor need to be given more money.
Global Warming? If we all believed it send some rockets into high earth orbit and contaminate the upper atmosphere with sunlight reflecting metal scraps to keep sunlight from reaching the earth.
Of course then we would have an ice age that would be blamed on political/environmental activists.
The world will do just fine without all this crap about climate change.
I think they are repeatedly saying that the sky is falling.
My plants know what to do with the extra CO2 in the air, too.
That dripping sound is my heart bleeding for all those who invested in and trade in “carbon credits”.
This is a currency that has even less rationale than Bitcoin exchanges.
Carbon dioxide is STILL plant food. And plants grow, with or without the attention of mankind.
As far as temperatures go, the same thing happens if we stay in or leave: NOTHING measurable.
If we leave
* libs will produce a lot of hot air
* China will not get US money through the treaty’s required contributions to the global climate fund
* US electricity rates won’t have to rise because we try to support a treaty that does NOTHING
* Economic competitors will not see US manufacturing costs rise because of an increase in energy rates
* “Scientists” write more papers saying the US MAY increase temperatures by 0.3 degrees over 100 years. Other scientists find the calculations exaggerate warming and the increase is actually within the margin of error.
The last one already happened and pro-AGW scientists say 0.3 degrees impact the US may have over the next 100 years if we leave. Based on their assumptions and the 30+ year record of those assumptions, that is likely to be nothing measurable.
I’d like to see the weather channel do an honest article about what happens if we stay
* Trump set’s CO2 goals (which could be to get to 100% renewables or to triple China’s CO2 output. He’s living up to the agreement either way)
* Trump reports on progress toward goals (which could be “no progress” every time if our goal is “100 renewable energy” but is still living up to the agreement)
* We give $billions to the global climate fund. China gets some
* Liberals feel smug even though NOTHING happens to decrease CO2 or temps
* Communists see some success in harming developed countries with AGW agreements and keep trying. They will probably still keep trying if we leave but start from a step back
Our wealth will not be squandered on undeserving countries.
Globalist scam artists get screwed. (Winning)
I like the study that said that the people who were more science literate worried less about man made climate change.
What happens?
My fantasy: All liberal coastal.cities are inundated overnight.
Anything from we all die in 10,000 years to we save trillions of dollars. I’ll take trillions of dollars.
Naming winter storms...LOL...I can’t wait until they start naming heatwaves, then droughts.
$Billions of dollars are saved.
You misspelled Trillions.
“Which scientists say?”
375 “TOP” “scientists” who SIGNED A LETTER!
that’s who!
like this?
Bears repeating, some people don't know that even though they see it in action every day.
Ahhh...they’re everywhere!!
Bottom line: Ivonka, Jarred and Tillerson rule ... not withdraw, but strengthen ...
And yes you will die ... someday.
OOOOH! One of my favorite movies!
