Epic fail: Every student flunks state exam ( Baltimore )

Zero proficiency in math, English in probe of 6 inner-city schools.

In an astonishing outcome, an investigation of six Baltimore schools found not a single student passed the state’s proficiency test in the subjects of math and English.

...

In February, columnist Thomas Sowell, noting “most public schools in most low-income, inner-city neighborhoods produce educational outcomes that are far below the outcomes in other neighborhoods,” observed that many teachers who use unorthodox methods to reverse that trend encounter opposition from the education establishment.

He said that in his 40 years of observing successful minority schools, he was struck “by how varied are the ways that success has been achieved.”

Sowell said one New York City principal who “did not follow the rigid dogmas imposed by the educational establishment” and instead used “whatever ways of teaching produced good results” faced attempts to get him fired.

In California, he said, a high-school teacher Jaime Escalante “taught calculus so successfully in a predominantly Latino school that, at one time, something like one-fourth of all Latino students who passed the AP calculus test – in the entire country – came from the school where he taught.”

“Like other highly successful educators, especially in places where failure is the norm, Escalante was controversial within the education establishment. The teachers’ union demanded that his large math class be reduced in size. He ended up leaving that high school to go teach elsewhere.”

...

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos .. Her confirmation, Sowell said, jeopardized “the stranglehold of the teachers’ unions and the educational bureaucracy on the education of millions of students.”

Rejecting her nomination, he wrote, would mean “millions of children from low-income, inner-city families will lose a chance to escape a painfully failing system.”

This situation has been apparent for YEARS....the asinine teachers union will try forever to defend the incompetent nitwits who are some of our teachers. The inner cities have been turning out poor quality education forever....much of it, of course, is due to the lack of parental supervision....half or more of the kids have no idea who their fathers are...abject poverty because no one in the family has a job...This has gone on since I was a kid and I’m 78 years old!

How come those wonderful public school teachers didn’t supply the little darlings with the answers ?

Because many of them don't know the answers unless they pull questions from a source with answers.

These schools don’t actually teach anything; they just watch the children for 6 hours a day to get them out of the house and feed them two meals 5 days a week.

If someone actually learns something it’s purely by accident or the student is self-motivated because the teachers are not there to teach. They are there to babysit.

Like the old cliche about the Soviet Union

Baltimore teachers pretend to teach, and the students pretend to learn.

Just wait until everyone is owed passing college degree for free. Seriously, every administrator and teacher should fired and let private schools take over.

The Baltimore City Public School System spent the fourth most per student during the 2014 fiscal year out of the 100 largest public school districts in the country, according to a new report by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Doesn't sound even close to likely. How many students taking the test could've come from that school? Let's say 500? So only 2000 Latino students passed the test countrywide? Out of what, at least a couple of million Latino students? (Did he mean county instead of country?)

At some point, those White parents with school-age children either put them in private schools, home school or simply move out of the jurisdiction entirely. Voila ! How you end up with resegregated schools, especially in these locales.
