This Evergreen college sounds like a loony bin. Can’t think of any reason for the public to subsidize this hot mess.

For about 18 months, I was stationed up in this region (at McChord) in the early 1980s. What you figured out after a few weeks there was that there were three significant cities in the region and each had some unique character, charm, or screwed-up problem.

Tacoma was this working-class town that desperately survived off Army and Air Force expenditures. As much as the locals hated that...they had to grin and bear it.

Seattle was a yuppie town, that seemed fake. No one with real money lived in the city...they just came to walk around, sip coffee, or discuss art. People with real money lived on Vashon Island.

Finally, Olympia (where Evergreen sits). Even in the 1980s, you regarded Olympia as the place where the mental midgets, nutcases, or radicals lived. My impression was that one in three residents from the area smoked weed on a daily basis (that was the 1980s).

There’s somewhere in the region of 5,000 students that attend Evergreen....most all (I’m willing to bet on this) are from a 100 mile circle of Olympia. It would shock me if you found more than 100 non-Washington state students at the college. Out-of-state tuition is 24,000 compared to in-state levels of 6,000.

Looking for minority students? This just isn’t the region where minorities ever moved into. I would have doubts that you have more than 10-percent who are non-white. So this whole bizarre attitude is mostly from punk kids from the region. My guess is that parents will review options and some who were going to enter as freshmen in the fall....will be going to a second option. By fall of 2018....figure a one-thousand student loss which the school can’t really explain.
