A top Russian official said Sunday at a security conference in Singapore that North Korea’s nuclear ambitions are a “direct threat to Russia.”

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin told defense ministers and experts from 39 countries that Pyongyang’s missile defense system “has a real function.”

As China responds to President Trump’s call to pressure North Korea to curb its rogue weapons programs, Russia has stepped in to help the hermit nation stay connected to the rest of the world.

Trade between Russia and North Korea increased by 73% during the first two months of 2017 compared to the same period the year before, boosted mostly by increased coal deliveries from Russia, according to Russian state-owned news site Sputnik.

China, North Korea’s chief political and economic benefactor, said it had curbed coal deliveries to North Korea and taken other steps aimed at persuading North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to halt his nuclear and ballistic missile development programs.

In addition to a boost in coal shipments, other moves by Russia to expand commerce with North Korea include:

• A Russian company, Investstroytrest, opened a new ferry line in May connecting the Russian port city of Vladivostok to the North Korean city of Rajin. Mikhail Khmel, the company’s deputy director, told Reuters the ferry is aimed at Chinese tourists seeking to visit Vladivostok by sea.

• Russian railway officials in January visited North Korea to discuss upgrades to the Rajin-Hasan railway, which links Russia to the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s state news agency TASS.

And that the *collapse* of the murderous Soviet Union (aka, Evil Empire) was the "greatest catastrophe of the 20th Century). He apparently wishes it was still around. With his increased aggression in Eastern Europe and elsewhere, looks like his intention is to basically restore it, with a handful of deranged jerks here cheering him on along the way..

Dope. It was Hillary and Obama who had colluded with Putin to help him bring Russia back as a serious military threat. Obama handed your hero KGB/FSB Putin everything he wanted on all-important missile defense and nukes, including the Iran nuke deal that Putin loves so much. Hillary helped the Russians obtain control of 20+% of our uranium production, via the practically ignored Uranium One deal/scandal. Soon after the Russians passed along a large supply of uranium to Iran. And please don't include yourself with "most" people here. You are a longtime Putin cheerleader.

It’s not in Russia’s best interest to see the US or Japan attacked. Their economy is too weak and their people won’t support it. Their comment is probably trying to kick the can down the road back to China.
