People who are not legal residents of the U.S. are not eligible to take part in what is formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
But many poor families include a mix of non-legal residents and legal ones, such as children who have citizenship because they were born in the U.S. In those cases, it is often an adult who is not a legal resident who submits the application.
Some now feel that is too dangerous under a president who has made immigration enforcement a priority. Throughout the U.S., there are accounts of people resisting efforts of nonprofit organizations to sign them up for food stamps, letting benefits lapse or withdrawing from the program because of the perceived risk.
“They don’t want to put their name and address on a form for a government public benefit out of fear that they’ll be sought out and asked to leave,” said Teresa Smith, executive director of Catholic Charities of Orange County, California.
The food stamp program provides monthly payments, typically about $125 per eligible household member, to poor families to buy essential staples. Going without can be an extreme decision, advocates say.
“This means less food on the table, fewer meals in houses where the kids have rights because they are U.S. citizens,” said Andrew Hammond, an attorney for Chicago’s Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law.

If you really want to see the illegals run just introduce a bill in congress to reinstate the draft with finding and drafting illegal men a priority. Hen make public statements that military mobilization is immenent.

One would hope they would be limited to citizens. If the immigrants can’t support themselves here, they should not be here. I would never expect to move to another country and expect to get handouts from the government to support myself...NEVER!
When my mom moved here in the 50s she was a legal alien and not entitled to any public assistance.

The workaround is to have an anchor baby. The baby, a US citizen, gets the food stamps. The parents, illegal aliens, get the checks. So illegals can and do get welfare benefits.

Less free food for other countries’ citizens? Where is the down side?
How about we stop granting citizenship to children born here to illegal aliens? It may have made sense a couple of centuries ago, but no longer. ALSO, we have to drop the dual-citizenship nonsense.
When I lived in Del Rio (TX),we had a running joke: Mexicans buy groceries in Del Rio because they're free and Americans buy groceries in Acuna because that's all we could afford.

Legal immigrants are supposed to have American citizen sponsors who guarantee that the immigrants will not need public assistance. Or, so it used to be.

Particularly when they breed like rabbits and produce a mammoth problem for the decent, hard-working taxpayers of this country.
I truly believe that if we were able to cut out all the waste fraud and abuse, coupled with forcing the Federal Government back inside the parameters set forth in the Constitution, that retiring the National Debt would not take all that long.
