I really don’t have an opinion as to whether Trump intentionally lied about revoking DACA.
I lean toward it just being too much of a hot potato and that is why he backed off..but who knows.
The maddening thing is, if he wanted, Trump could probably get a decent DACA through congress, “decent” meaning one that clearly didn’t give too many rights away, one that was more narrowly focused, one that would be much better than what we’ll end up with the next time the democrats end up in power.
Meaning, if you are going to keep running the program anyway, why not be done with it as an issue, pass a law just good enough that a constituency for expanding it doesn’t exist, and that clearly prevents a future president from using executive authority to implement something more.
meanwhile, I’m betting that some judge WILL decide that a DACA person has some basic “right” to it, and therefore can’t be removed from the program after the 2-year period ends — because that’s what judges seem to be doing these days. They’ll probably claim it’s because Trump said bad things about immigrants during the election.
