OPINION: The damaging case against James Comey
thehill.com ^ | 6/9/17 | Jonathan Turley

The testimony of James Comey proved long on atmospherics and sort on ethics. While many were riveted by Comey’s discussion of his discomfort in meetings with President Trump, most seemed to miss the fact that Comey was describing his own conduct in strikingly unethical terms. The greatest irony is that Trump succeeded in baiting Comey to a degree that even Trump could not have imagined. After calling Comey a “showboat” and poor director, Comey proceeded to commit an unethical and unprofessional act in leaking damaging memos against Trump.

Comey described a series of ethical challenges during his term as FBI director. Yet, he almost uniformly avoided taking a firm stand in support of the professional standards of the FBI. During the Obama administration, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch gave Comey a direct order to mislead the public by calling the ongoing investigation a mere “matter.” Rather than standing firm on the integrity of his department and refusing to adopt such a meaningless and misleading term, Comey yielded to Lynch while now claiming discomfort over carrying out the order.

ADVERTISEMENT When Trump allegedly asked for Comey to drop the investigation of Michael Flynn or pledge loyalty, Comey did not tell the president that he was engaging in wildly inappropriate conduct. He instead wrote a memo to file and told close aides. He now says that he wishes he had the courage or foresight to have taken a stand with the president.

However, the clearest violation came in the days following his termination. Comey admits that he gave the

Comey didn’t merely “diminish” his credibility, he destroyed it.

So Comey's unethical and illegal behavior is due to Trump.

Comey has blown his integrity if he ever had any.

I think Mr Jonathan underestimates the Emperor. I'm sure he had Comey nailed as a criminal, cowardly, egotistical windbag years ago.

I’m guessing Comey’s “woe is me” Congressional exhibition was to build a popular defense against whatever allegations are stalking him.

Comey has blown his integrity

Indeed

if he ever had any.

Whatever he had he surrendered back in July with that irreconcilable press conference.

I’m getting the feeling that President Trump has Comey in a legal bind. When Trump was asked today if he had tapes of
Comey, he gave that grin of his that tells you he nailed it, and just said “soon...soon” :)

Fox just reported that President Trump’s lawyer has been investigating Comey and the FBI for leaks since early March!!! I think Comey knows his testicles are in a vice and so he goes out there and admits he leaked the memos, knowing that the Senate will give him a pass, thereby setting public opinion on his side going forward.

Does he really think President Trump will give him a pass??? It could be his only play and I’ll bet that is exactly why he met with Mueller first and I’ll bet Mueller was the one who told him to play the “hero” by saying he leaked the memos “for the country’s sake”!

Best election ever:)

Comey broke several laws as listed in this article. He admitted same under oath. why would they need a further investigation? Is this going to be whitewashed like Clinton’s server. she admitted the crimes to the public and Comey said, its not criminal. what has to happen to arrest these a$$Hats?

Please let’s remember Comey did NOT leak his actual memos. He had someone read very select portions deemed damaging to Trump. He withheld the (presumed) exculpatory parts of the memos, but he’s now testified to many exculpatory details of his meetings with Trump.

Comey also caused or allowed false reports of his memo/ testimony - for example that he would testify he never reassured the president that he wasn’t under investigation.

I believe he ultimately testified to the facts helpful to Trump because Trump scared him by implying there might be tapes.

Just adding to the list of Comey’s unethical behavior.
