Because of the way a Speaker is elected, around 30 of the most liberal GOP House members can veto a GOP Speaker candidate, as can around 30 of the most conservative GOP House members. Any Republican Speaker is going to be a squish.

You’re right. However, this particular Speaker predicated his acceptance of the job on support by the Freedom Caucus. We literally have them to thank for Ryan.
