The most ridiculous story about it was the incident where hundreds of motorists traveling out of the city after a hockey game at the Prudential Center received summonses in the mail for running the red light at one particular intersection. They had been directed to drive through the red light by a police officer directing traffic after the hockey game.
The incident probably would have gone unnoticed, except that one of the victims was the spouse of a state legislator who raised hell over it and embarrassed the sh!t out of the City of Newark, the State of New Jersey (for even authorizing the pilot program in the first place), and the company that installed and operated the red-light camera system.
camera company gives use of red light cameras for traffic study for FREE (as long as they are exclusive ones)
camera company lobbys for red light camera tickets
law passes but you MUST have experience.
