There's a new attraction for thousands of people enjoying the long holiday weekend on North Carolina's Outer Banks.
Shelly Island is a destination you won't find on a standard map. The giant barrier island suddenly formed in the Atlantic Ocean, almost overnight.
CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann reports the mile-long island, which measures as wide as a football field, has attracted hundreds of tourists by boat for the Fourth of July.
Pilot Larry Ihler told Strassmann the island "has definitely gotten bigger" and is "more built up."
Strassmann set out by kayak on Monday to explore Shelly Island with County Commissioner Danny Couch, who is a life-long resident of the Outer Banks.
Couch says he's seen barrier islands pop up before, but not like this one, which he first noticed in April.
"This is the mother of all sandbars," Couch said. "All of a sudden, right here where we're sitting. It's a hoss. It's huge. It is big."

How can we see new land forming? The liberals have lectured us that with global warming, the sea levels are rising. How do you reconcile new land with rising sea levels?
Shag dance!
Making America Bigger Again!
Making the Outer Banks Great Again.
Evidently there’s quite a current between the tip of the point and this new island. They’ve had repeated rescues of people swept away since the tourist season began. So, if you feel compelled to wade out at low tide, which is apparently possible, realize what you’re going to have to contend with when the tide comes back in.
My Father always said Real Estate Investing is a good idea because they’re not making any more Land.
I guess he was wrong. LOL
Gol dang rising seas! Oh wait...
Gol dang rising seas! Oh wait...
Hope someone has planted an American flag on it. Otherwise the Chinese might start expanding it and build a runway there...
That’s just the remains of North Topsail Island to the south settling back in one place, lol.
Buy land—they’re not making it any more.

I believe the big island of Hawaii is making some new land. Ain’t quite ready to be used yet though.
More polar ice. Lower sea levels.
It is the sun, stupid
Just the top end near the Capr Fear River Inlet. The beach at our house further south is doing fine.
The north end of a lot of the barrier islands further south of Cape Lookout have that problem, it’s been going on for a long time. I remember when the Shell Island Resort was first built on the north end of Wrightsville beach and they had high tide in the parking lot in very short order, until their appeals to the state for beach nourishment and jetties was heeded. Many of those island have made their north ends into 4x4 beaches, following the lead of the OBX which has always allowed beach driving. It’s become extremely popular.
Maybe the Chinese built it.
China’s building a military base there already ...
I say, something digging and that be the spoil pile!
Look forward to lots of rusted-out 4X4s...
