Trump's CNN Feud Seen as 'Wild Card' in AT&T, Time Warner Deal
The Street ^

President Trump's ongoing feud with CNN could impact the news network's parent company Time Warner Inc's (TWX) $85 billion merger with AT&T Inc (T) , the New York Times reported.

The Department of Justice is deliberating the merger, but Trump's public disdain for CNN is regarded as a "wild card" in the White House, an unnamed senior official said.

It's unclear if Trump will attempt to influence the DOJ's review of the deal, but White House advisers have reportedly called it a "potential point of leverage."

CNN President Jeff Zucker said the merger isn't something he considers journalistically or in management decisions.

AT&T's shares fell 1.4% to $37.58 on Thursday morning. Time Warner's fell 0.1% to $101.31.

This seems to blame Trump but I think the problem is CNN incompetence.

Considering what's happening to ATT's and Time Warner's share prices, and to paraphrase P.T. Barnum, there's a Zucker born every minute.

Exactly.

It’s a reverse leverage — approve our deal or we’ll blame your hatred of CNN.

Meanwhile ....

They can blame Trump's feelings about CNN all they want; do they think the public will care? What do they expect, that ordinary Americans will march in the streets, write their congressman, because AT&T isn't allowed to buy Time Warner?

They have completely lost touch with reality.

Zucker is a bald-faced liar! I’ve been involved in M&A deals and the merger deal is considered as part of *EVERY** decision that is made by the company being acquired. Just look at the premium AT&T is paying and what it means in $ to the executives affected. Sure, Zucker will no longer have a job after AT&T takes over but he stands to make millions. If the deal doesn’t happen - he’ll still probably get fired for incompetence but won’t have any big payday.

Investors like stability. Nice and easy, no rocking of the boat.

If Trump manages to shove a sticks thru the spokes of this $85 billion deal it will be one of his crowning achievements.

Source: Trump Doesn’t Back The Time Warner And AT&T Merger If Zucker Still Heads CNN

Zucker is just one of dozens of anti-Trump operatives within CNN. Getting rid of Zucker won’t change CNN at all.

CNN collapsing under the weight of successful slander suits will change it pretty good though.

I abhor concentrations of power, govt or private.

I oppose the merger on those grounds alone. Large concentrations of power and large shares of the market reduces competition which leads to a slow down in technology progress and inflated prices.

I tend to go small business whenever I can. An added benefit is the small businesses are not funding the Left Media Cartel.
