One of the biggest scams ever foisted upon the American people. A time bomb. There never was a “lock box” that was raided, that’s a lie. It’s been a ponzi scheme since day one.

Frankly, this is a great example of the failed public school system. This is a major program that perhaps 60% of retirees rely upon soley for income. Yet nobody really knows that it is a time bomb, a scam, a Ponzi scheme. I blame the public schools for not teaching that, it's an important and simple topic to understand if taught. I understand why though, liberal schools support big government liberalism so to reveal this as a flawed program goes against their religion.

Commie care will ultimately save social security by having death panels refuse to treat retirees.

As I recall, Ronald Reagan had a social security commission which studied the issues of Social Security. As I recall, they increased taxes at that time, along with gradually raising the retirement age for younger people from 65 to age 67 and some months, for the youngest as I recall.

These changes were supposed to put Social Security on an even financial footing.

Since we know Social Security does not have a balanced budget, and we also have years of warning ahead of time, we could make minor changes now to fix things.

As to whether there is political will, that’s another story. Probably any proposed changes will have the liberals screaming about throwing Granny on Social Security off the cliff, and then so nothing will be done.

I know you’re kidding and that the octopus tentacles of FDR and LBJ entitlement obligations will not be weakened by our efforts. Just venting.

I'm a bit younger than you, but fully agree with everything you and the other responders have written. My musical notes and reply to 'Call the whole thing off' is my own amazement at the continued restraint by people such as yourself– and, come to think of it, the Right in general.

I don't think these politicians understand what they're playing with– real fire– or, more importantly, how angry some of the populace rightfully is about this stuff...

Don’t worry. The illegals will pay into social security and make it solvent......

Such a joke. “Baby boomers” would cause a problem WHY? Didn’t they work and pay in for 50 years? Why would they be a problem???? Scam. It’s evil though in that you can never kill it. “I paid mine in, it’s not a so-called entitlement, ‘I PAID IN!” Absolutely evil. Can’t be touched, politically. My God.

With all due respect, sir, I argue that what you’re describing are the hallmarks of a ponzi scheme. Of course they ran out of people and money. These are red flags. So what to do? Oh, raise the retirement age, lower benefits, raise taxes. That’s their only three moves. My point is that any way you slice it, we have a self inflicted disaster on our hands. A bill of goods from our own government. I don’t fault the American people. It’s already to the point that you’d literally be better off stuffinf SS money under your matress than participating in the scheme. It’s awful. The only way to stop it is to tell some unfortunate generation that they’ll have to pay in, but will see no benefits. Who wants to accept that? It’s an evil i scheme. Almost impossible to correct. Thanks, “progressives”.

I think no one thing will save SS, but moving the retirement age out is powerful. Each month that someone is not collecting, but paying into SS makes a huge difference.

And frankly, we can't afford to pay for 25-30 years of SS retirement.

Only people who PAY In to Social Security are able to receive it. It's a retirement plan.

Right?

Right?

I keep reading about these scammers but have only personally known one person who seemed to be a scammer. I have had people tell me that they know someone who was granted SS disability because they were drug addicted but the rules on the SS website clearly say that addiction is an automatic disqualifier. On the other hand my wife had at least two conditions which are listed as automatic QUALIFIERS but still spent twelve years going through different courts before being approved and then only getting five years backpay, not twelve. She had doctors telling her to apply for disability for many years but kept on working until winding up out of work and not being able to find another job. I even met one man who claimed that he knew a young woman who was given disability because she was frightened by a spider at work. I don’t know about other areas but it just is not that easy to get disability here where we live. It is not left up to a doctor it is decided by an administrative law judge.

“Medicare and Medicaid though are time bombs and the boomers didn’t even remotely close to pay in the cost of their medicare.”

Medicare can not possibly break even because the existence of government interference drives medical costs up many times what they would normally be. I am 73 and have never yet used my medicare benefits for anything but most people my age would be better off had medicare never existed, the costs would be so much lower that they could pay out of pocket and come out better.

Possibly. Healthcare costs outside of government programs (medicare, medicaid, military, etc) have grown at basically identical rates to government cost per person since 1960 would be the counter-argument. Certainly doesn’t help though.
