To: Two Kids' Dad

It’s funny how some of us FReepers have stories from our youths that would absolutely shock and appall some of the other FReepers,...
**************************************
December ‘61, active duty Navy, home on leave, age 19, driving dad’s ‘58 Impala, fell asleep ~ 2am after breakup with girl and consuming mass quantities of suds.

Left road to the right into a swale and up the other side, airborne across a street and into a 30ft. oak tree in the front yard of a house. Hit the tree 10-12ft. above ground and completely uprooted it. Hit dead center and no glass was broken, but impact drove engine, firewall and all back into front seat area about 12 inches. Would have been inside that house if the tree hadn’t been there!

Since I was limp, I only suffered minor cuts just below my knees from the dashboard and got a cut through my right eyebrow from the horn ring on the steering wheel. That head cut was bleeding like crazy and a woman handed me a towel. People were all around in pjs and robes and amazed that I could get out and walk around.

Small incorporated city with only about 5 cops. One quickly arrived and took me to a near clinic and called my dad (about 5 miles away). The Doc was great and layered the stitches to close the gash and reattach the skin hanging down over my eye. ....The investigators estimated I was doing 90mph.

Next morning, Dad woke me about 9am, we drove to a Chevy dealer and he bought a new ‘62 Impala, while I had to drive the old ‘52 Dodge back home.

While that was not the last time I have imbibed to excess, it did teach me not to do so when driving a vehicle; ESPECIALLY one of the plastic autos being mfd. today!

That story sounds familiar. Uh... Arizona, Jato rocket bolted to back end of an Impala, teeth buried in the steering wheel?
