The goal is to remove what critics of the criminal justice system call an unfair disadvantage for poor people and people of color, who reportedly pay disproportionately higher amounts for bail.
“Nationally, African American men pay 35 percent higher money bail amounts than white men, and Hispanic men pay 19 percent higher money bail amounts than white men,” part of the Harris-Paul bill reads. The individuals who would be exempt from bail are described as “low-risk individuals” awaiting criminal trials.

There are very strict guidelines for bail amounts and for the most part liberal judges decide those amounts.
This bill should be shot down.
If some people pay higher bail, it is no doubt because of the nature of the crime, previous record, and so on. What a flaming stinking pos Paul is.
The whole racism and rich vs. poor themes are just window dressing. The bill is a good one on simple merits. No other country on the planet still requires a cash bail to get out of jail while awaiting trial. It’s an archaic system that ought to be done away with. If someone is a likely flight risk then we don’t let them out. If they aren’t, then what difference does a cash bond make?
So? Maybe they commit crimes that warrant higher bails. Just because a group of people pay more bail doesn't in and of itself prove anything.

did that “study” control for equivalent crimes and equivalent prior criminal histories? I bet not.

Sounds like Harris and Paul are trying to start another government program. Now they want $10 mil. In two years it will be $16 mil and $25 mil after 10 years.

I oppose this because you have the Federal Gov't getting involved. Rand of all people should know better. This is a SOP to his libertarian buddies, which is why the Libertarians will never get elected beyond a seat on the Town Water Board.

a boulder county sheriff friend of mine once told me that if the average street criminal was smart, the police would be in real trouble.
