Military action against North Korea 'not unimaginable': Dunford
The top US military officer has raised the possibility of a military confrontation with North Korea over its nuclear program, which he described as our No. 1 challenge.
"As I've told my counterparts, both friend and foe, it is not unimaginable to have military options to respond to North Korean nuclear capability, Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a security conference on Saturday.
Dunford stressed the importance of continued economic and diplomatic pressure on Pyongyang, but dismissed the notion that a military option should not be on the table.
"Many people have talked about military options with words like 'unimaginable,'" he said at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. "I would probably shift that slightly and say it would be horrific, and it would be a loss of life unlike any we have experienced in our lifetimes.
What's unimaginable to me is allowing a capability that would allow a nuclear weapon to land in Denver, Colorado. That's unimaginable to me. So my job will be to develop military options to make sure that doesn't happen," the general stated.
Dunfords comments follow North Korea's testing of an inter-continental ballistic missile earlier this month.
The United States is worried that Pyongyangs rapid advancement in the weapons systems would soon make it capable of delivering a nuclear weapon on ballistic missiles.

P!
It is unimaginable, otherwise it would have already happened.
The more it is discussed the less I think it will happen.
What is the problem in referring to the link above?
I don’t think you can post Politico in news.
ok
Before we can go to war with enemies foreign we really need to sort out enemies domestic.
Some enemies foreign have an intention and are rapidly developing a capability to destroy our cities or in the case of an EMP shot, Western Civilization.
The Norks would be doing us a favor destroying the West Coast cities they can reach...
We don’t have to take on the entire country , we just have to take out the fat man .
Once gone , do you really think they would go all out war ? In his absence . I think not .
It would have been the same with Iraq ; if we had truly tried to take out Saddam FIRST , the entire outcome , and the entire aftermath , to this day , would have been different . Better !
We need to develop a space based weapon that is individual man targetable . Call it Global Opponent Destroyer , or G.O.D. for short ...zap um !
Operation planning never ceases. Scenarios, roundtable discussions, paper exercises, hotwashes, updates, revisions incorporating technological refreshments etc.... are all taking place continually, and have been for decades. It is what operational planners do.
It also part of the uniformed services SOP.
That sh*t again? FU.
So you support the murder of American citizens? Including many MILLIONS in red counties who voted for Trump? And you want my family, and JimRob's family living in California to be blown up?
You hate-California people are as dumb, vile, and despicable as any fascist democrat.
I think the US Navy should be directed to carry out a covert program to redirect the North Korean thinking. Probably the best way of doing this is to systematically wipe out their submarines. North Korea has a substantial fleet of subs and see them as an important backbone to their military.
According to a report published by BBC in 2010, “The North Korean military is in possession of a fleet of about 70 submarines, comprised of approximately 20 Romeo class submarines (1,800 tons), 40 Sang-O class submarines (300 tons) and 10 midget submarines including the Yono class submarines (130 tons).”
But the trick is not just that we take out many of these, but in how we take them out.
Ideally, we would take out most of their Romeo class subs at the same time, in which they would sink, and the last thing heard from them was when they would reach crush depth.
No torpedo in the water, no big explosion, just silence then ‘pop’. Importantly, sonar around the world today is so good that this would be heard by several other navies.
This is not without precedence, as just before the fall of the Soviet Union they lost four subs in just two months, all of which had the same defective critical part.
The end result of this program would not just be to unnerve them, but to force them to redirect resources away from missiles to getting more submarines.
Oregon, one of the admitted most progressive states in the West Coast, has only five of its thirty six counties voting progressive. Even those five ultra liberal counties have active opposition to progressive policies. Wishing death on millions of Americans sounds a little Bolshevik to me.
A military option against Iran isn't 'unimaginable' either...
