In an interview published Wednesday, President Donald Trump told The New York Times that young people pay $12 a year for health insurance. "Because you are basically saying from the moment the insurance, you're 21 years old, you start working and you're paying $12 a year for insurance, and by the time you're 70, you get a nice plan," he said.
It is possible that he may have misspoken and meant to say "$12 a month," since, in an interview this spring with The Economist, Trump made the same argument, only he cited a figure of "$15 a month."
Insurance is, you're 20 years old, you just graduated from college, and you start paying $15 a month for the rest of your life and by the time you're 70, and you really need it, you're still paying the same amount and that's really insurance.
Regardless, it is not the norm that 21-year-olds pay that little each year, or each month, for insurance on the Obamacare market. Most Americans pay significantly more than that for health insurance, even young people.
Twenty-somethings, who generally would benefit from lower premiums should GOP repeal-and-replace efforts succeed, already pay the least. But even their costs can be considerable.
An average 21-year-old making $25,000 a year would be charged $282 per month for a silver Obamacare plan, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. However, that person would qualify for federal subsidies that would cut the amount they would personally pay by half to $142. That person could also be responsible for a four-figure deductible, which is the amount each consumer must pay out-of-pocket before coverage kicks in.
Even in the most affordable states, most 21-year-olds pay much more than $12 a month simply for their premiums. In Utah, one of the least expensive states in the nation for Obamacare coverage for young people, for example, an average 21-year-old would pay $142 a month, according to Kaiser. The cost without subsidies would be $198.
In Alaska, one of the most expensive states, a 21-year-old would pay $104, but only because subsidies would cover most of the actual cost of $707 per month.
They could also be responsible for four-figure deductibles as well as, potentially, coinsurance, co-pays and other costs.
Some pundits have speculated that perhaps Trump continues to confuse life insurance with health insurance, since premiums for the former can indeed work the way he described.
My thought: Oops
Trump merely was engaging in hyperbole.
And they were paying it in all 57 states.
Some people are allowed to misspeak and others aren’t.
I wondered if he meant life insurance, since he made a comment about being 70.
The cheapest at $12 a month for catastrophic insurance.
1. Tort reform. Docs/hospitals are not in a habit of purposeful "mistakes" but they are deep pockets to many patients and lawyers.
2. Payment for doctor visits paid by patient.
3. Prescriptions paid for by patient.
4. Get rid of the mandates that cover everything for everyone that should not be part of health insurance.
It sounds to me like he is talking about a whole life insurance plan, and misspoke and said health insurance.
Yes, that is what it sounds like to me, and whole life insurance at that.
The norm now is for 21-year-olds to pay zero, because Obama has required them to covered under their parents’ plans until age 26.
And delaying adult decisions had nothing to do with it.
Has to be life insurance. I have never heard about $15 health insurance except maybe when I was in school as part of student health care..and that was decades and decades ago
My guess he is confusing life insurance with health insurance. When your 70 you don’t need health insurance because you’ve been on Medicare for 5 years(yes I know about supplements). Sometimes Trump is his own worst enemy. He really doesn’t need to comment on everything and he shouldn’t say anything if he doesn’t have the facts. Why give the opposition ammo?
I think he just has health insurance on the brain on that came out rather than life insurance.
I looked on Twitter to see what people are saying. Gerber has a commercial on fox about $1 a week insurance..but that still doesnt explain the number.
In any case..has to be life insurance
Note: I didn't fill out the request to get the quote, but yes, it has to be whole life insurance, because I know it doesn't apply to an old fart such as myself..
While saving 3000%.

I bought a no health check life insurance policy on someone else as an investment. Pretty expensive due to age. Has to live two years to payoff otherwise just get my money back plus 10%...but 10% is a good return
A minor mistake compared with the media’s constant reference to health insurance as “health care.”
If someone were to lose their government subsidized insurance (up to 100% in many cases) it certainly does not mean they will lose their “health care.” They just may have to pay for it, (or gee, maybe they will take better care of themselves or get a job with better benefits).
Remember truly indigent people are covered by Medicaid.
