Like flying cars from the 1950’s, AI since the 1960’s has been trying to cash checks for gazillions with not a penny in the bank.

As a computer scientist ever since the 1970’s I’ve been watching out for the promised AI revolution and have yet to see it.

I agree that machine consciousness has yet to be observed.

But IBM’s Watson is an amazing knowledge retrieval system. And there are sophisticated decision systems in some tools. And automation is getting rid of a lot of low skill jobs.

We don’t have “thinking machines” but we do have a lot of hardware that can do jobs ( many low end jobs but also an increasing number of high end jobs). As an economic trend, it is something we will have to deal with, and it’s not “over the horizon”. It’s here.
