Wow, I was just down there a week ago. But you are right, why would a beach vacation be ruined by a power blackout? If anything, it would increase my time on the beach and that is not a bad thing. The only real downside would be warm beer.

" Without power will North Carolina’s Outer Banks sink ?"

As long as the waves keep moving past it's gills, it should be fine.

Other areas affected, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras.

As of this morning crews have not seen the cable to assess the damage.
The cable is about 12” dia.

Emergency generators there and on the way. Governor had to waive weight restrictions for transportation.

Wonder about Hatteras Lighthouse.

Well, they also don’t have refrigeration, lights, the stove and maybe water or the toilet. Not my idea of a vacation.

Why do they need to evacuate just because the power is out? This sounds absurd.

It’s the tourists that were ordered to evacuate.

I’ve never figured out how to do a successful search on FR.

Google works pretty well though ax an FR search
engine.

I’m good with multiple posts of the same news as I can’t spend all of my time on the site.

This link performs a pretty good title search:

Type in ‘Outer Banks’ and see what you get.

I can guarantee you there would be many more downsides than warm beer.

“Families” go on these beach vacations. In my case, “family” included a mother-in-law with constant needs and limited mobility, a husband who didn’t like the beach, and two preteen children. We were in Nag’s Head in the Outer Banks for the 4th of July, in a house that was literally right on the water. Worryingly close to the water. The airconditioner broke on the 3rd of July and of course nobody could or would come to fix it because of the holiday. There was no ocean breeze to speak of, even right on the damned water. It was way over ninety in the house. I still had to feed people four more meals and clean the house before we left on July 5th. And it was too hot to sleep, even with fans. So you better believe my beach vacation was ruined by a lack of airconditioning. But let’s make it even worse:

Now imagine there is not just no airconditioning, but no power. All the food you purchased is rotting in the refrigerator or melting in the freezer. There is no ice to buy because the stores have no power either. Neither do the restaurants. People still have to be fed.

And you can’t do laundry either, not for your stepson who wet the bed or your mother-in-law who crapped herself.

AND there will be no refunds.

Oh yes, a power failure can ruin the hell out of a beach vacation. There’s not enough beer in the world to make up for that.

Just the word “mother-in-law” no longer made it a vacation! No amount of even ice cold beer can make up for that.

Hosted on Fotki South end of the Bonner Bridge, which connects Bodie and Pea islands. Power comes under the Oregon Inlet from the north, up the power pole, and continues south as overhead transmission lines. Somewhere between the power pole and the water is where I believe the cable was damaged.
