Booker T. Washington

On the third of his four voyages, Columbus sailed south along the west coast of Africa before heading west across the Atlantic Ocean. Then he was caught in the doldrums, a notorious condition of no winds and intense heat.

After drifting aimlessly for eight days and running out of drinking water, Columbus vowed that if the winds returned, he would name the first land he saw after the Holy Trinity. The winds returned and on July 31, 1498, Columbus sighted an island off the coast of Venezuela which coincidentally had three peaks rising from the bay. He obtained fresh water for his sailors and in the process was the first European to see South America.

Columbus named the island Trinidad in honor of the Holy Trinity.

Nice piece. Sometimes we don't act on a chance. Sometimes we do.

And those to whom knowing about him would give the greatest inspiration have probably never heard of him...their teachers consider him an OREO.

Booker T. Washington's autobiography, Up from Slavery, has been one of the most influential books of my life. I read it decades ago when I was starting my career, and think of it often, especially any time I'm tempted to quit or slide by on something. His lessons about diligence and about throwing yourself on God's mercy, especially when you are exhausted, are so compelling.

Booker T. Washington would be treated with contempt by the news media if he were around today.
