An unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base early Wednesday to test the weapons reliability to defend against attacks on the United States and its allies, the Air Force said.
The Minuteman III missile was fired at 2:10 a.m. from the base northwest of Santa Barbara, according to the Air Force Global Strike Command. The missile, equipped with a single test reentry vehicle, traveled 4,200 miles to a test range near the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
The strike command said the test was not a response to recent North Korean actions. Rather the launch demonstrates that the United States' nuclear enterprise is safe, secure, effective and can protect against strikes, the command said.
The test comes after North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile on Friday the second in less than a month. The two-stage missile crashed off the coast of Japans northernmost island, Hokkaido. Independent defense analysts say such a missile may be capable of reaching California and other parts of the West Coast.
On Tuesday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. government would agree to a dialogue with North Korea if it relinquishes its nuclear program.
"We are trying to convey to the North Koreans: 'We are not your enemy, we are not your threat. But you are presenting an unacceptable threat to us, and we have to respond,'" he said.
Wednesdays launch was conducted by Vandenbergs 30th Space Wing team, the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming and the 576th Flight Test Squadron, the Air Force said. The 90th Missile Wing is one of three bases overseeing the countrys intercontinental ballistic missile forces.
The test is the fourth ICBM launched from the base this year.

Well past time to stock up.
Now we should test a warhead. Just a small one, aimed at Pyongyang.
They are called Glory Trip missions. They plunk these dummy warheads down in the ocean outside of Kwaj to make sure they are accurate. I use to support these missions when I was over in the Marshall Islands working for the Army. Depending upon the mission, you have as many as three warheads screaming in over your head at about Mach 9. They were very impressive.
LA Times probably doesn’t know that an ICBM is an offensive weapon.
Kind of like their friends over at Media Matters...
Deep state agitating for war, any war
Can’t you just picture “independent” Commiefornia every time Norks act up?
Hippies and illegals, come runnin towards “USA”
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
It is an offensive weapon in the hands of a paranoid turd like KJU. For reasonable leaders, it is a deterrent.
U.S. has de-MIRVed all of our land based ICBMs down to one warhead per recent treaties.
How about this?
We send a registered telegram through China to Kim Jong Un.

Dear Fat Boy:
If you launch one nuclear weapon at the United States, the country of North Korea and all its inhabitants will cease to exist.
Thank you.
USA
“On Tuesday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. government would agree to a dialogue with North Korea if it relinquishes its nuclear program.”
At least we know the key diplomatic issue: A precondition that Norklandia abandon their nuke and missile programs before we’ll sit down and “talk” (negotiate some sort of exchange for a Peace Treaty).
Russia and China insist we have no preconditions. As does Norklandia.
We insist they abandon their programs...or we will take whatever steps are necessary to destroy them.
Stalemate.
We win.
If you were there in February 1987 then you saw my three RVs impact. I was on one of the three Ops crews for Glory Trip GT120 GB.
So ...
1. KJU has not launched several ballistic missiles.
2. KJU has not conducted nuclear weapons tests
3. KJU has not stated his intent to place nukes on said missiles
4. KJM has not stated his intent to launch a first strike against the U.S.
5. Everybody is wrong about KJU, and he’s just a misunderstood, peace-loving, harmless little marshmallow.
As I told you on another thread - go back to sleep. We have adults in charge now, thank you.
Nope. I was there 2008-2010 working in the Optics shop on Kwajalein Island. I supported several GT missions from Legan and Illiginni. We had to helicopter out in the wee hours and stay all night on these remote islands. Was actually the experience of a lifetime.
LOL
you believe the lies told by the neocons ?
How does an ICBM “defend against attacks”?
Wouldn’t this be an ABM type missile?
Or are they just referring to deterrence?
I have always wondered about this CalExit thing.....what would their army look like? Navy? Air Force? lol...
