DOJ warns the media could be targeted in crackdown on leaks

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Friday announced a government-wide crackdown on leakers, which will include a review of the Justice Department’s policies on subpoenas for media outlets that publish sensitive information.

At a press conference with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, Sessions announced that the Justice Department, FBI and government intelligence agencies will direct more resources into the investigations of government leaks and would prioritize prosecuting those that pass sensitive information along to the press or foreign officials.

Sessions said he had empowered his deputy director Rod Rosenstein and incoming FBI director Christopher Wray to oversee the classified leaks investigations and to monitor the progress of each case.

The national security division of the Justice Department will prioritize cases involving unauthorized disclosures, Sessions said, and the departments “will not hesitate to bring lawful and appropriate criminal charges against those who abuse the public trust.”

Since when has revealing confidential national security information part of 1st amendament? Isn’t every spy exercising first amendament right?

Wow, a stern warning!

Yes, probably even sent a sternly-worded memo to those entities, something the GOP is famous for (not so much with following through, though). My prediction is that the leaks will now triple in number as I'm sure the swamp creatures will laugh off Sessions' warning.

It's simple really.... the Ayatollah of leakers in the White House is the National Security Advisor himself, McMaster. I don't see how else the entire conversation between Trump and the Australian Prime Minister over a super secure line ends up on the front page of the Washington Post. The NSC are the ones with the supercomputers that hoover up all phone calls. Given that McMaster is busy pushing Obama’s agenda right now, wouldn't surprise me a bit if he were the leaker.

It is a crime to leak classified information

The supreme court only said prior restraint is not allowed, but it didn’t say the press can become a part of espionage ring and get away with it.

Actually, when the media does not exercise due diligence on what they print/broadcast, relying on “anonymous sources” and printing whatever they get from them, they are AIDING AND ABETTING the dissemination of possible classified material, endangering the security of the USA.

The editors and reporters should face responsibility for NOT verifying that the information is fit for public consumption.

Could be? Could be? How about instead General Sessions uses the words has become and is - just for those in the press on the long tail of the rumor circuit.

Wow, a stern warning!

Stern warning? This doesn't even approach "mild disapproval" from Sister Mary Elephant.

Law is founded in ideas, and coded in language. It describes limits to actions.

The media has been pushing the limits more and more over the past many decades. They crossed the line some time ago.

I believe the ingredients for conviction are available.

The lawbreaker in a leaking case is the leaker, not the recipient of the leak.

If the recipient of the leak doesn't reveal their source, then they covering up a crime.
