Lady cows of course fair far better on average in modern farming than do the gents.
We are very nice to Evangeline's calf, Pot Roast, up to the day he is slaughtered but still.... one year of life is not very much time.
Oh and cows do continue to give milk even if they have not "just given birth". You have to deliberately dry them off for the last couple of months of pregnancy to reduce the stress on their bodies.
I know that—I grew up on a dairy farm myself.
