Dean Heller faces the perils of opposing Trump with Danny Tarkanian primary challenge

Nevada Sen. Dean Heller is testing the political perils of opposing President Trump from inside his own party, with the entrance into the 2018 Republican primary Tuesday of Danny Tarkanian.

Tarkanian, a five-time failed candidate for public office, is wrapping himself in the mantle of Trump, vowing to be an enthusiastic, loyal soldier for the president in the Senate, where Heller tends to vote with the White House, though not blindly and at times reluctantly.

"I am a conservative Republican who supports the policies of President Trump to repeal Obamacare and end illegal immigration," Tarkanian said in a statement. "I will continue to support President Trump's policies that have led to a 20 percent increase in the stock market in just six months." Heller endorsed former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in the 2016 GOP presidential primary and never fully embraced Trump after he won the nomination. The senator sparked the president's ire recently by opposing the initial version of the Senate GOP proposal to partially repeal Obamacare.

Tarkanian has lost 5 or 6 elections in Nevada, and never won. If someone wants to take Heller out, maybe they should keep looking.

Heller voted for Rubio’s amnesty, he MUST be removed from office or he will do it again.

Tarkanian has never had President Trump campaign for him. That will make a UUGE difference.

Heller is likely done regardless. Nevada has been Californicated.

So where is your ideal candidate? Maybe someone else will surface, but at least Tarkanian has stepped in which is more than anyone else has done.

Trump endorsed Strange in the Alabama senate race. I expect he’ll endorse Heller in this one.

Can everyone agree on who the best candidate is and then get that person to run? Tark has stepped up. The anti Heller folks divie up their votes and Heller gets the nomination. That’s bad.

W.A.R. would be a great candidate but there’s no reason to believe that he’s prepared to run against Heller.

Danny Tarkanian may not be the greatest candidate in history but you have to give him credit for stepping up to the plate for a 6th time after 5 previous losses. Voters seem to give him respect, anyway, even though he narrowly lost his last Congressional race in a bad year for Nevada Republicans. His main opponent in the GOP primary last time was no slouch.

Heller has created such animosity against him in the Nevada Republican Party that I consider Danny to be the favorite against Heller, despite the traditional advantages of incumbency in contested primaries. Of course, he’ll need to run a good campaign to actually pull off the victory.
