looks like lots of edges, seams, and cavities - lots of things that generate radar returns. As others have pointed out, those engines don’t seem to have any bypass airflow, they are going to be IR searchlights. Well, it may be low observable from some aspects....

My reading of the Gulf War suggests that we used our F-15C’s as BVR shooters to protect AWACs and aerial tanker assets. So it’s not that it never happened, just that the circumstances permitting the tactic are fairly limited.
