The ACLU has defended neonazi and klan groups in the past, most notably when the nazis tried to march in Skokie, IL which was largely Jewish at the time. Maybe some in the ACLU are trying to be consistent when it comes to protect the 1A, (too bad most ACLU members are too dense to realize that without the 2A it wouldn't take much to lose the first, or the 14A for that matter) but yeah, anything involving leftists stinks to high heaven.
