McAuliffe's actions in Charlottesville under fire, independent review demanded

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe's actions before and after the deadly weekend race clashes in Charlottesville are coming under fire amid calls for an independent review to determine if politics played a role.

Former Republican Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore on Tuesday raised new questions about Richmond's involvement in the riots the claimed three lives and said the public "needs to know" if the state and city had taken the proper precautions to avoid the clashes and if police were told to stand down.

The ACLU said McAuliffe was using the group as a scapegoat. (Graeme Jennings/Washington Examiner) In an interview with Secrets, he dismissed McAuliffe's call for an internal review. Instead, Gilmore, who was a presidential candidate in 2016, said that an independent group must be charged with the investigation, taking it out of the governor's office.

"This has to be an independent review. We have to know what the governor did, how he participated in it, whether he was part of the meetings, whether he had a meeting, whether the secretary of public safety was in the meeting, where it was held, was it in Richmond or Charlottesville, what planning was done, and what constraints if any were put on the police," said Gilmore, a former Virginia attorney general and county attorney.

Gilmore, president of the American Opportunity Foundation, formerly known as the Free Congress Foundation, said, "While we support the police, we know they do a good job, we don't know what direction they got at the time of the Charlottesville riots."

Several reports have said that the police stood by as white supremacists and their foes faced off in fights. Others said that when the violence escalated, unprepared police had to leave to get proper equipment.

Gilmore also said there was a report that some police were "asked to stand aside and be more passive."

He added, "They didn't have a plan to separate these groups. The governor seems to be blaming everybody else."

Gilmore said, "You have to have afore-knowledge of what is ready to happen and a plan in place to be able to deal with it so the police can carry out the plan. In this case the was no plan apparently to divide these people from one to the other. We need to know, we need to be advised as to what action was taken or not taken."

In a televised statement Saturday, McAuliffe seemed to blame the white hate groups for the violence, but he later blamed the ACLU which sued to keep the protest in downtown Charlottesville.

McAuliffe should publicly apoligize for bringing his motorcade to Charlottesville for photo ops during the melee and tying up police resources.

The two officers in the helicopter who died were escorting McAuliffe’s motorcade.

Let's see we have this, we have Antifa and allied hate organizations, then neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate organizations apparently lead by a former Occupy Wall Street leader...bringing all of them together for a big brawl to break out...

"I've good news, my lord...the war has begun."

"Excellent...everything is going as planned."

Mc Auliffe is a crass Clinton operative. He knew there would be violence if the police were restrained and he knew he could exploit to become a Leftist hero. Very reminiscent of Clinton’s behavior and response to the Oklahoma City bombing.

Virginia Democrat, Governor, Terry McAuliffe is absolutely 100% the cause of the Charlottesville massacre. After listening to every word of the Charlottesville, Police Chief presser...it was clear as a bell, the poor Chief was in over his head, big time, lost at sea!!!

This whole scheme and plan was set-up and meant for police failure to occur, and let the two left & right wing nutcases, bigots, America haters get at each other. McAuliffe figured he had it wired, he just failed to see that the unexpected horror can occur, which it did, resulting in three deaths to innocents.

He should be thrown out of office and sent to jail. Virginians, you should be ashamed of yourselves and your so called, Democrat Party.

Uh oh, it’s McAuliffe’s “Bridgegate”.
Glad he’s being called on it.

Some police whistleblowers need to come forward and say who gave the order to stand down all day as fights rampaged as well as who ordered the police to herd the neo-nazis directly into the most violent antifas.

There has to be some honest American cops who will go to Jeff Sessions, get protection and tell the truth.

Wonder if he received any orders from Obama’s fortress in Washington.

If there were some plan for McAuliffe to run in 2020 Presidential primary...I think his actions on that Saturday pretty much removed that option.

They might as well. They are getting thrown under the bus by another Democrat.

That's the first I'd heard that. All other reports said the helicopter was monitoring the crowd from the air. Even worse, now.
