Abraham Lincoln Monument Torched In Chicago
The Washington Times ^ | Douglas Ernst

Abraham Lincoln has joined George Washington on the list of those targeted by Chicagoans in a national debate over Civil War-era monuments.

Alderman Raymond Lopez took to Facebook Wednesday night to decry a defaced statue of the nation’s 16th president in the Englewood neighborhood. The giant bust appears to have been damaged after someone in the 15th Ward sprayed and ignited a flammable liquid.

“What an absolute disgraceful act of vandalism. This bust of Abraham Lincoln, erected by Phil Bloomquist on August 31, 1926, was damaged & burned,” Mr. Lopez wrote, a local NBC affiliate reported. “If anyone has any information regarding this act, please contact the police or my office immediately.”

“F- Abe Lincoln,” responded Quintin Mitchell, whose comment was “liked” or deemed “funny” by 160 others.

The official’s finding came just one day after President Trump stated opposition to tearing down memorials related to America’s past with slavery.

“I wonder is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?” Mr. Trump asked reporters on Tuesday while addressing violence in Virginia.

I recently snapped a pic of the plaque that is posted outside of Teddy Roosevelt’s NYC birthplace.

Glad I got the pic, before they tear THAT down, too.

We also strolled under the George Washington Arch, at GW Square.

Got some nice pics there, too. Guess that will be next to come down, by these isis wannabes.

What’s really funny is that those “Antifas” that fought for the Republican-side in the Spanish Civil War against Franco was called the “Abraham Lincoln Brigade”.

I think he was being sarcastic but in case he wasn't, no, many of the Founding Fathers were from slave free parts of New England. Franklin, John Adams, Sam Adams, Thomas Payne, Paul Revere, none of them had slaves.

Makes sense. Lincoln was a Republican.

When do they remove "Land of Lincoln" as a motto on license plates and on billboards at the state line welcoming travelers?

Oops. Shouldn't use the term "traveler" any more...that was the name of Robert E. Lee's horse. His racist horse.

I believe Franklin owned a slave at one point. Later he was a leader in the anti-slavery movement.

My point was that after Lincoln died, there was very little help regarding education for the former slaves. What real help was available was through isolated, private endeavors.

A few had patrons, or enormous personal gumption, and did well. But the vast majority were left alone, and ignorant. They had 'literacy' tests imposed upon them, in order to qualify to vote - but nobody had bothered to teach very many of them to read. One of the tragedies of Emancipation, is that these people were set loose and left helpless, in many ways.

Here is what Shelby Foote said in an interview:

The institution of slavery is a stain on this nation's soul that will never be cleansed. It is just as wrong as wrong can be, a huge sin, and it is on our soul.

There's a second sin that's almost as great and that's emancipation. They told four million five hundred thousand people, You are free, hit the road. And we're still suffering from that. Three quarters of them couldn't read or write, not one tenth of them had a profession except for farming, and yet they were turned loose and told, Go your way.

In 1877 the last Union troops were withdrawn after a dozen years of being in the South to assure compliance with the law. Once they were withdrawn all the Jim Crow laws and everything else came down on the blacks. Their schools were inferior in every sense. They had the Freedmen's Bureau, which did, perhaps, some good work, but it was mostly a joke, corrupt in all kinds of ways.

So they had no help. Just turned loose on the world, and they were waifs. It's a very sad thing. There should have been a huge program for schools. There should have been all kinds of employment provided for them. Not modern welfare, you can't expect that in the middle of the nineteenth century, but there should have been some earnest effort to prepare these people for citizenship.

They were not prepared, and operated under horrible disadvantages once the army was withdrawn, and some of the consequences are very much with us today.

By the way: in this interview, Foote said that he would have fought on the side of the Confederacy, saying,"The political correctness of today is no way to look at the middle of the nineteenth century":

I can't find a direct link to this original interview - it seems to have been 'cleansed', and you can only find it through websites that view it in a derogatory way; but that is what the man said.

I hope that's enough "detail' for you. But I'm curious: why are you so darn angry???)

You might want to read up on the Brownsville Affair in 1906 where Teddy unjustly slapped 167 black soldiers with dishonorable discharges based on false charges and refused to reverse his decision despite evidence of their innocence, which is standard practice for Progressives like Roosevelt. I am completely confident that this event is not the basis for those targeting his statue, but it is the main reason I relocated a bust of TR I have to basement storage. Of course I am not siding with those who seek to destroy history.

I guess ol’ Abe should have stayed in KY, but they wouldn’t vote for him there.

Thus proving that Black Democrats hate ANY President who happens to be a Republican, even the one that sacrificed 600,000 American lives to free them while turning the Constitution on its head.

That's your source?

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Even though it was illegal to do so, there were slave owners who taught may of their slaves to read and write.

If one slave ( usually a free man, who had been captured and sold into slavery or a house slave who had been taught or just managed to teach himself somehow ) could read and write, he would secretly teach others how to.

I'm NOT claiming that it was all instantaneous, nor that suddenly great schools fro negros popped up like mushrooms after constant rain; however, your claim and Foote's are inaccurate. Yours more than his.

For starters, I highly recommend you read : ARISTOCRATS OF COLOR, by Willard B. Gatewood and OUR KIND OF PEOPLE, by Lawrence Otis Graham.

Booker T. Washington was born in 1856, as a slave. Yet not only could he read and write, he graduated from college and was hardly the exception!

What you neglect to remember ( or perhaps even know ), is that many whites didn't graduate from grammar school back then, let alone go high school, withe even fewer going to college !

After the Civil War, negros raised money to build schools and hire teacher...often going without to do so. IT USED TO BE VERY IMPORTANT AND MEAN A GREAT DEAL TO ALL OF THEM, TO HAVE EVEN A BIT OF EDUCATION!

There's a very interesting silent, from the very early teens, written by, acted by, directed by, produced by, and filmed by negros! These films were called "RACE MOVIES" and were made into the talkie era. I've seen many of them and not only are they interesting, they're VERY good!

One of these films dealt with education and a woman teacher's tenacious endeavors to raise some much needed money for her grammar school.

There have been/still are great schools, medium schools and lousy schools all across this nation which every child, no matter what race, sex, and religion has and does go to.

And as an aside, some elite boarding schools, sans AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, have admitted negros to their classes, for most of the 20th century, if not earlier.

Ever hear of Madame C.J. Walker? If not....go cfind out about her!

No, she never went to college, married ( for the first time at 14 ), but she could read, write, and do math. Not only that, but she became the first female, self made many multi millionaire! She was born in 1867, the first member of her family to be born free, and she was smart as a could be.

I post FACTS; Foote, originally just a writer of fiction, wrote about his opinions, based on a bit of fact and a whole LOT of bleeding hearted opinion/bias/generalization.

The people screaming about tearing down ALL statues, don’t know anything at all about this one incident. And one incident does NOT a “racist” make.

You are picking and choosing a few individuals, and not addressing four million, whose ignorance we are dealing with today.

And to compare whites who didn’t go to school, with blacks in those days, is ridiculous - the whites had solid backgrounds embedded in their white culture, which made up greatly for any lack of formal education.

You seem to have a real problem with ‘affirmative action’. I don’t blame you - it’s always been a mistake. But it was an attempt to remedy the very original problems that I have been trying to explain.

I think Shelby Foote was an extremely thoughtful person who was able, in an extraordinary way, to see both sides of an issue.

You seem to be full of personal resentment about something that I can’t figure out - and I’m really not interested in communicating any further with someone who’s first line in a communication is a juvenile

“BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA”

Good Night, Sir.

I have a VERY personal resentment re STUPIDITY, people who post specious, uneducated crap, and then claim that they are the ONLY ones who know anything and that am wrong, as well as posters who use lefties/opinion pieces as source material/factual history.

I posted hard, cold FACTS, which unlike you, substantiated with many, diverse examples.

During the Civil war, and directly after it, in NYC, alone ( forget at the moment the rural children and one room school houses, in the midwest, which had WHITE "children" as old as 14, still doing class work on the third grade level, if that...IF they were still even going to school), there were many children ( mostly orphans and run-aways ) who did NOT even go to school and who could NOT read the papers they hawked.

You want more examples of well educated negros? Okay...I'll post a long list, IF you swear, IN YOUR OWN BLOOD, that you shall look them all up AND read both books I listed earlier. So let me know if you shall and I'll post the list; it'll be extensive.

The ignorance, that we are dealing with today, re ghetto cretins, IS SELF INFLICTED!

Not only was the marriage rate, of negros, higher than that of whites, from the end of slavery, through the 1950s/early '60s, there wasn't the moronic "learning/doing well in school is only for whites" crap!

I bet you just LOVE Ken Burns biased, sometimes spurious psuedo documentaries too. Bet you imagine him to be just "brilliant"; as you do FOOTE, who appears in a vast, nay, insane portion of Burn's Civil War docu-propaganda.

You have almost NO knowledge of what you're attempting to discuss and your one and ONLY source has NOT been lionized by all; many have stated that his *cough* "histories" not only left out a LOT, but also left much to be desired.

You appear to have not only great disdain for FACTUAL history, all of the factual points I have made, and me. You also IGNORED every single point I made. WHY IS THAT? I respond to your posts, with clear, coherent, and cogent points.

Both skilled and literate

He freed them in his elderly years

Like I care one iota to be honest

So basically everyone who was born before 1900 is a scumbag because back then everyone was racist by today’s standards.
