Chinese SUV maker Great Wall Motors is considering making a bid to buy Fiat Chrysler's Jeep unit, spokespeople for the company said Monday, in a possible ambitious new step onto the global stage for China's fast-growing auto brands.

Great Wall has yet to formally declare its interest in Jeep, but a possible acquisition would be in line with chairman Wang Jianjun's goal, announced in February, of becoming the top specialty SUV producer by 2020.

Great Wall "has this intention," said the public relations director for its Haval SUV brand, Zhao Lijia, when asked about a report by Automotive News that the Chinese automaker wants to buy Jeep. An employee of the press office for the company headquarters, who would give only his surname, Zhang, said, "Yes, we are interested in Jeep."

Zhao and Zhang said they had no other details when asked about a possible price. Zhao said it may take some time to assemble a formal bid.

Years ago, before Chrysler's financial meltdown, Mercedes-Benz took a hard look at Jeep.
A Chrysler purchasing guy told me M-B had worked up a series of companion products, including Jeep Tourism, Jeep clothes, shoes, etc.
Then the Germans dropped the idea without explanation.

I wonder if a US company could take the classic Jeep design of the 40s/50s, clone it, and market it today, “a “keep it simple, stupid” kind of Jeep.

My guess: The ChiComs buy Jeep so they can close all US production facilities.

Following other past successes such as Kmart and Sears. Sell off profitable ventures so you can afford to continue making poor choices with what’s left.

FIAT gained majority ownership and control of Chrysler in May of 2011.

It didn’t take long to start thinking about breaking it up and selling it off.

They’d still have to meet all emissions and CAFE standards, plus safety mandates. No longer simple.

Globalist want all manufacturing ceased in the USA. That is their ultimate end goal. To them it makes no sense for Americans to make/manufacture anything when 3rd world peasants can do it all and they can pocket the difference as profit.

FCA is selling off Jeep and Ram to get return on their investment and golden parachutes for Marchionne and his pals. They quit caring about about any of the FCA brands.

Marchionne has been trying to peddle FCA parts to GM and VW, as well as several Chinese carmakers.

FCA is worth about $20 billion, and the owners want a premium over that.

FCA spun off Ferrari, and is trying to do the same to Jeep, Ram, Maserati and Alfa. Other brands would probably just go away.

Emissions and CAFE is doable. The original had a 4 cylinder 2.2L 60 HP engine. There are plenty of off the shelf 2L engines available now that will deliver at least 100 HP, and with approved emissions.

The safety standards are another story. I'm not even remotely aware what would have to be done. As usual, it's the government bureaucracy that kills it.

Then again, somehow that hideous hooptie "Smart Car" was able to do it. I guess they got a free pass because it was "gay" looking.

It’s time for Chrysler and Dodge to go away. Nothing but bottom dwellers in any reliability survey. I do own a Jeep Wrangler, but strictly as an off road vehicle. I would never own one as a daily driver or winter vehicle.

This has to be stopped. We cannot allow our culture to be sold the Chinese. Enough.
