Woody Guthrie did that. Left his wife and kids in dire circumstances, and they suffered terribly.
He seemed to be an authentic artist (and the Left idolizes him), but he certainly had that dark side. Later in life he suffered from Huntington's chorea. Don't remember the whole story, but maybe some of his children had forgiven him and came to be by his side before the end.

They can do it because they are sociopaths. There is something seriously wrong in their mental makeup that prevents them from forming normal emotional attachments to other people.
I’d say the odds are high that this man is a sociopath. But there is also a chance that it’s the wife who is the sociopath and leaving was the only way he could cope. My odds would be about 92% the dad/3% the mom/5% neither or both.
When a non-sociopath walks out on a sociopath, it’s often because the normal person does not have the expertise to recognize the sociopath, and is overwhelmed by the malignancy of the situation. Mental health professionals are often fooled by sociopaths, so there is often no help there. There is rarely any support from family or society for someone who walks out (i.e., is forced out). That’s not an excuse for everyone who leaves (again the odds are high he’s a sociopath himself) but it’s something to be considered. People should have more facts before passing judgment.
It’s hard to imagine a perfectly good relationship and then - bam! - one fight and the guy walks out. There was a history leading up to that which might shed some light on the underlying situation.
I think some of these posts are an interesting insight into the minds of those who immediately condemn or support the dad or mom.

A little Googling pretty quickly reveals that Paulides is a crackpot.
Walk away & never look back. How do they do it?
...
Some women are worse than death.
True.
But I have friends in law enforcement that have stated some interesting things about missing person cases implying a lot more active killers out there.
Paulides is best known as a Bigfoot researcher (!) but he has a bigger claim to fame with his “Missing 411” books.
YouTube has a lot of related videos, mostly dealing with disappearances in our National Forests. It certainly sounds fishy, with the number of missing persons involved.
