So Afghanistan chooses to govern itself in an Islamic fashion. Is that in our national interest?

“...If this article is true...”

Washington Post fake news propaganda. There is no way the President changed his mind over women in western dress.

The President specifically stated in his speech that his goal is NOT to make Afghanistan into a western style democracy.

His goal is to stabilize it so terrorists can’t train there and then ultimately leave.

I remember that after 9-11 the news media blamed the President because we DID NOT go into Afghanistan after the Russians left, to prevent a Taliban takeover.

If we HAD gone into Afghanistan after the Russians left, they would have blamed the President for trying to “create an American Empire” and denying the Afghans the right to chose their own future.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Afghan King was a modernists, but was overthrown by his Cousin and ex-Prime Minister during no joke, an out-of-country eye appointment/procedure. Kabul looked like a Colorado town in the early ‘70s.

Pie-in-the-sky BS though, Afghan was a monarchy during that picture. Do you think they tried to get back to that? What prevented that (Not the Soviets BTW)? The powers that be including the US tried their best in the mid to late 70s. What and who continues to prevent that?

The ship has sailed, just Pyrrhic victories due to the geopolitical landscape/ideology/nukes/diplomatic entrenchment/ well too many people/generations taking Islam seriously.

However modern and western the place might have been in the past, remote or proximal, the fact is that the whole country is Moslem and westernization will not return barring conversion of most or all of the population to Christianity if brought about from an influence outside of the culture and there is nothing inside of the culture that can change it so long as there is a foreign presence in the land.

A Moslem culture can change of itself if an indigenous strongman like Ataturk in Turkiye arises to take it by the scruff of the neck but any attempt to impose change from without only steels the resistance. You can't do anything with a culture that prefers death to any sort of change.

I could list my thoughts on “how”.

The point is that advertising “how”, is the first step in giving the enemy the ability to defend and defeat “how”.

That picture tells a story that is all too common in the Muslim world. Similar pics can be found for Iran and Turkey in the 50’s and 60’s

Afghanistan has been the breeding ground for radical Islam for the last 40 years.

One of the great tragedies is that the Soviet Union's intervention in Afghanistan was a response to the creeping Islamic radicalism in Afghanistan.

Our Cold War mentality forced us to side with what became the Taliban to defeat the Russians and hasten the collapse of the Soviet Union. Our subsequent withdrawal from the region under the Bill Clinton “Foreign Policy is no longer important” (remember that?) holiday from history was directly responsible for the rise of the Taliban.

We now find ourselves in a position where Islam has defeated the West in Europe and is making headway into the United Sates.

The only win against a Moslem culture is colonization of the whole country. The society cannot be changed.

McMaster is an idiot if he thinks he can make Afghanistan of today into a western country. At least now we understand the problem.
Guys like McMaster actually, literally, believe Afghanistan can become a normal society with Walmarts, paved roads, McMansions, and women in mini-skirts.

Astonishing how rock hard stupid this man is. Somewhere today in America, a baby was born. It will die in Afghanistan in 20 years or so because of people like McMaster.

Wasted.

“so Afghanistan chooses to govern itself in an Islamic fashion. Is that in our national interest?”

Who cares! The Saudis govern themselves in an Islamic fashion and we get along fine with them.

Our national interest is to prevent the now chaotic Afghanistan to become a safe haven for the training of terrorist cells.

Once it is established that Al Qaeda or ISIS is not allowed there; how they then govern themselves is not relevant or in our national interest.

President Trump has no interest in nation building and he stated it clearly in his speech - did you see it?
