In an online post, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) blamed overconsumption of fizzy drinks, excessive computer gaming and even masturbation for the poor health of young people.
It said physical test failure rates had reached an "alarming high", with at least half of the candidates failing in one city.
The military has been struggling to find recruits in recent years, despite its heavy promotion of patriotic "heroes" and military TV and film dramas.

Not quite - but the geographic distribution is now way off. Plenty of girls - even a surplus - in the big cities, but very few in rural areas.
When I was in the USA, I consumed a lot of fizzy drinks. I didn’t drink at all, except beer and maybe a little bit of Bourbon, but anyway, we did PT every morning so we didn’t get fat.

Why? Is the PLA planning on using Raging Tiger Style against the wideeyes? Including the reserves the PLAFG has 2.1 million, so we send a couple hundred old bikers to slap the snot out them. Maybe we send some of these gang kids who are playing Polar Bear to play Poke the Panda.
Stupid comment? Well its a stupid premise. For them the volume of defense related work completed and the ability to wage warfare is an issue of numbers and how they are assigned. They have no chance to outfight, outrun, or outbuild an American division on a 1 on 1 basis.
Most oddly is maybe the fact than in a fight against the US, its the computer dorks and video gamers that are going to be most capable of doing damage in modern warfare but they dont want any of those.
I saw a bunch of those DVDs in a bootleg video store in Toronto's Chinatown a few years ago. I was intrigued about possibly picking a up few of them. I mean, a Chicom war flick? Why not?
Until I thought for a moment about who the "bad guys" would be in those movies.
