Say No to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Mr. Trump (the daily pre-pardon coverage continues)
New York Times ^ | August 24, 2017 | The Editorial Board

Posted on 08/25/2017 7:41:11 AM PDT by Seizethecarp

While Mr. Trump was beginning his revanchist run for the White House on the backs of Mexican “rapists,” Mr. Arpaio was terrorizing brown-skinned people across southern Arizona, sweeping them up in “saturation patrols” and holding them in what he referred to as a “concentration camp” for months at a time.

It was this behavior that a federal judge in 2011 found to be unconstitutional and ordered Mr. Arpaio to stop. He refused, placing himself above the law and the Constitution that he had sworn to uphold.

That alone would be reason enough to deny him a pardon. But a grant of mercy from Mr. Trump would also go against longstanding Justice Department policy, which calls for a waiting period of at least five years before the consideration of a pardon application and some expression of regret or remorse by the applicant. Mr. Arpaio shows no sign of remorse; to the contrary, he sees himself as the victim. “If they can go after me, they can go after anyone in this country,” he told Fox News on Wednesday. He’s right — in a nation based on the rule of law, anyone who ignores a court order, or otherwise breaks the law, may be prosecuted and convicted.

Pardons are by definition political decisions, and presidents of both parties have used them in unsavory ways. What’s remarkable here is that Mr. Trump is weighing mercy for a public official who did not just violate the law, but who remains proud of doing so.

NYT Editorial Board wants 85-year-old Joe Arpaio to wait 5 years to ask for a pardon for an obviously politically motivated prosecution by Eric Holder! I thought these liberals were supposed to be compassionate.

In 1983 Rich and partner Pincus Green were indicted on 65 criminal counts, including income tax evasion, wire fraud, racketeering, and trading with Iran during the oil embargo (at a time when Iranian revolutionaries were still holding American citizens hostage).[7][17] The charges would have led to a sentence of more than 300 years in prison...

...

On January 20, 2001, hours before leaving office, U.S. President Bill Clinton granted Rich a highly controversial presidential pardon.... Former President Jimmy Carter, a fellow Democrat, said, “I don’t think there is any doubt that some of the factors in his pardon were attributable to his large gifts. In my opinion, that was disgraceful.”[24]

Arpaio knew that crime in his county was being committed by illegals. He went after them for state law violations, driving without a license, working with fake ID (AZ has state income tax), etc. What was his ultimate goal? Maybe to break the chain of human trafficking that has made Phoenix the kidnap capital of the U.S.

The federal judge ordered him to stop enforcing the law. Way too much of that being done under the Obama regime.

Oh for God’s sake, Arpaio was convicted of a misdemeanor. He is not going to go to jail for a first offense. A presidential pardon is a bit of an over-kill.

I am not sure if he should pardon him before any appeal.

I think this would easily get tossed on appeal.

He was in court for failing to obey an ILLEGAL court order.

So do we want people ‘just following orders’? Or not?

When did the slimes become concerned about the Constitution and political oaths?

Heck, I am for it anyway...this is just icing on the cake...:)
