Have you considered the fact that the moon is gradually moving away from the earth. Millions of years ago, it would have appeared much larger in the sky. Millions of years in the future, it will appear much smaller. Perfect solar eclipses didn’t happen in the far past and won’t happen in the far future.
How’d we end up with a moon anyway?

Yes, there tends to be competing theories for most things that we don;t understand well enough. People keep investigating, building up knowledge until an answer becomes clearer. If new information or knowledge comes to light in the future that contradicts the original understanding, the theory gets changed.
That’s why we have antibiotics, cancer treatments, spacecraft orbiting distant planets etc. It’s one of the best things about humanity.
